Supreme Court president on judges’ retirement

The president of the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ), Jorge Subero Isa, said that judges should act according to their conscience when deciding whether to retire due to advanced age, as reported in El Caribe. “They should retire when they understand they are not providing a benefit to the country”, sustained Subero Isa. He pointed out that the current judges were appointed in 1997 in accordance with the Constitution and that is why the Law on Judicial Careers cannot be applied to determine their retirement. He said his own length of service in the Supreme Court of Justice will depend on two things: first, when he understands he no longer has the support of his fellow judges, and second, when he perceives that the citizens are no longer supporting him. Subero Isa’s comments come at a time when several sectors of society have requested the removal of several judges due to their advanced age.
