Pelegrin Castillo criticizes migration policies

Fuerza Nacional Progresista (FNP) deputy, Pelegrin Castillo said yesterday on the Revista 110 TV program that the DR authorities have displayed poor judgment in their dealing with the problems created by illegal Haitian migration, that in his opinion will end up destabilizing not only the island, but the entire Caribbean region. He stated that the country is facing an invasion, and cannot remain on the defensive, which is what in his view is the position the authorities have adopted so far. Castillo said that Haiti is at present in a process of dissolution. He said that the Department of Migration is unequipped to deal with the problem, as it does not have either the logistics or the funds to implement an effective migration policy. He denounced what he described as the international campaign portraying the DR as a racist country when it is in fact the victim of a true occupation. He said the international campaign is not about respecting human rights, but rather one aimed at making the country accept millions of Haitians in its territory. Castillo said that internationally, the campaign seeks to present the DR as a place where ethnic cleansing of Haitians takes place. He criticized that while this campaign is going on, the government is sending the wrong signals by apologizing, which in his opinion only serves to stimulate more accusations against the country. “Those who have mounted the campaign know that the Dominican authorities tremble and falter before those attacks, he said. He said that the government’s conduct is interpreted by Haiti as a signal that the deportations of illegal Haitians in the DR will decline. Castillo added that the country needs to control illegal immigration across the border, which according to him is also the scene of drugs and weapons trafficking. He explained that the migration of labor is accompanied by a migration of Haitian criminals.
