Name of Peña Gómez soon to be added to name of airport

The Chamber of Deputies voted in favor of adding the name of the late PRD leader José Francisco Peña Gómez to that of the leading airport of the nation. Santo Domingo’s international airport will be known as Aeropuerto Internacional de las Américas Dr. José Francisco Peña Gómez once President Hipólito Mejía signs the bill. When in government, former President Leonel Fernández had vetoed a bill that changed the name of the airport to that of Aeropuerto Internacional Dr. José Francisco Peña Gómez when the majority PRD Congress during his government passed the bill. Fernández, with the support of former President Balaguer, defeated Peña Gómez in the 1996 election. (6 December 2000)
