JCE receives ink, lots of ink

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) has received a shipment of 108,000 bottles of indelible ink for use in the coming election cycles of February and May 2020. The ink has traditionally been used in an attempt to impede voters from voting more than once.

The ink will be first used in the 16 February 2020 municipal election. But the purchase is also sufficient for the ink to be used at stations where voting will not be automated for the congressional and presidential elections in 17 May and a second-round vote in June if necessary.

The National Polytechnical Institute of Mexico City is the supplier. Mario Nuñez, the elections director for the JCE, traveled to Mexico to receive the 2,700 boxes containing the ink.

As reported in early January, the ink will be transported to the Dominican Republic from Mexico by Amerijet.

The ink is costing taxpayers US$1,281,695 or almost RD$68 million.
