
Cecilia Garcia, the famous Dominican singer who now lives in Miami, was one of the first to complain she had been transferred to vote in Santo Domingo, while she registered to vote in Miami. After García complained, several others that find themselves in the same position have complained. Among these, lawyer Sabrina de la Cruz says that around 2,200 Dominicans who had registered to vote in Canada were transferred to vote in New York.
The JCE says there is nothing it can do, that the voting list can no longer be changed.
The JCE has posted a link, where Dominicans living in the Dominican Republic and abroad can verify where they are assigned to vote.
In May, the president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE, Julio Cesar Castaños Guzmán had practically written off the possibility of Dominicans voting abroad. It took New York legislator, Adriano Espaillat to organize the Dominican community abroad to get the JCE officials to take the vote abroad seriously. Nevertheless, the recent reports indicate that many Dominicans are not going to be able to exercise their right to vote after all.
