President Luis Abinader said he will be touring Pedernales with his wife and one of his daughters this weekend. He said he deserves the break after the intense first two weeks in government. He made the observation during a meeting with leading Dominican media editors at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday, 26 August. Abinader promised the media the meetings would be held every two months.
Abinader has promised the time has come for Pedernales to become the next Dominican tourism destination. Abinader sees in tourism the solution for creating jobs in the southwest. He said the Public-Private Alliance Law will be used. He explained the government owns the land and the private sector could make the investments in infrastructure.
The focus so far has been on Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, Samana, Jarabacoa-Constanza, Boca Chica-Juan Dolio, La Romana-Dominicus-Bayahibe. Santiago, Montecristi and Peravia are also working for their market share as tourism destinations.
It seems Pedernales will be getting a good part of the attention of the new government. The past government authorities prepared the field. Lemay, the leading Canadian sustainable architectural firm, was contracted by the past Medina administration to present the master plan. The plan was introduced in January 2020 and received positive reviews. Lemay also has drafted the development plan for nearby Destination Jacmel, a new beach destination in Haiti. Pedernales is a border province with Haiti.
Lemay recommends creating an ecological and circuit tourism to attract the active, adventure-focussed tourist profile while minimizing environmental impact, promoting conservation, educating tourists and locals about the natural and cultural environment, and strengthening connections with the community.
Abinader says he wants to see for himself where the proposed ambitious project to build hotels, an airport and other infrastructure will be developed. The focus of all is Bahia de las Aguilas, a fragile ecosystem with a gorgeous long beach strip. At present access to Bahía de las Aguilas is mainly by sea.
