Border fencing felled by TS Laura allows easier flow of illegal crossings

The government has announced the reconstruction of the fence of the border with Haiti near Pedernales. Tropical Storm Laura brought torrential rains that undercut the fence and damaged its footing, leaving many wide gaps. The media reports that as a result, there has been an increase in the flow of illegal crossings.

Late last week, a team of high ranking military officers in the Dominican army toured the border area to see for themselves the damage to the fence. Major General Julio Florian Perez said solving the immigration control problem is a priority of the administration. Nearly five kilometers of fencing was seriously affected by the rains from Tropical Storm Laura this September. The army is looking at the fastest way to resolve the issue that has made it easier for illegal crossing from Haiti.

A recent editorial in the Listin Diario noted that in the Dominican Republic there are gates, not border control. The editorial pointed out that there is very little control along the border with Haiti except for the border outposts and immigration control stations.
