
The Ministry of Public Health’s Epidemiology Department Coronavirus Bulletin #203 reports 724 new confirmed cases, comparative to the 777 for the previous day. 3,738 PCR tests were carried out, comparing to 4,599 for the prior deadline. The 14-day average is 3,417 tests. The 24-hour positivity rate is at 19.37%, up from 16.89%; the 4-week positivity rate is up at 13.83%. For the 26 September bulletin (#192), the positivity rate had dropped for the first time under 10%. After the reduction of curfew hours on 29 September, the cases have gradually jumped upwards. The increase in cases also coincides with the Mercedes Day long weekend.
The Ministry of Public Health reports active cases are up 22,142 up a significant 310 cases.
Local epidemiologists continue to alert the population that the spread of the virus comes and goes. The Ministry of Public Health is concerned that home gathering, increased mobility, especially with the reduction of curfew hours and domestic tourism promotions, will affect the spread of the disease that is now said to be “under control.” This situation is why the Ministry of Public Health continues to recommend keeping a curfew and preventive measures. The new curfew is in effect is from 29 September to 17 October 2020, from 9pm to 5am Monday to Friday, and 7pm to 5am on Saturdays and Sundays.
As per Bulletin #203, with the deadline of 7 October 2020, the Ministry of Public Health has registered 116,872 confirmed cases since the first case on 1 March 2020.
The health ministry announced the processing of 3,738 first PCR tests. The 14-day average for first PCR tests is now at 3,417 PCR tests. The Ministry of Public Health says the demand for PCR tests has declined at both government and private labs. PCR tests are now readily available at 15 public hospitals nationwide.
The number of deaths is 2,163, including ten deaths recorded and none occurring in the past 24 hours. Local physicians in public and private systems now have better treatment protocols to deal with the sickness, resulting in fewer patients requiring hospitalization. In a population of more than 10 million, the fatality rate is 1.85% over the past four weeks. The fatality rate per 1M inhabitants is 207.02. The Ministry of Public Health reports that the average 1M inhabitants’ fatality rate for the Americas is 550.
Worldometer lists the 1M deaths per inhabitant rate for the Dominican Republic at 198. According to the 1M deaths statistics, people are less likely to die of Covid-19 in the Dominican Republic than in Spain that lists at 696, Brazil at 697, the United States at 655, the United Kingdom at 627, Italy 597, Colombia 533, France 497, Argentina 491 and Canada at 253, all major source markets for Dominican tourism.
The Ministry of Public Health report indicates that 21% of Covid-19 hospital beds are occupied (722 of 3,392 total available). 35% of the intensive care units for Covid-19 are taken (188 of 531 beds). Health Minister Plutarco Arias says that the emphasis is on detecting the cases early on, so fewer persons now require hospitalization.

The Ministry announced 34 new cases for La Altagracia province, after reporting 166 on the previous day, as a result of an outbreak due to a gathering at a cockfighting ring and a local jail. The largest outbreak of cases for the Bulletin #203 deadline is reported for La Romana with 344 cases. What happened there is not known yet.

In the Americas, the Dominican Republic is now ranked 11th in confirmed cases after the United States, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Canada, Ecuador and Bolivia.
