The director of the National Institute of Transit Ground Transport (Intrant), Rafael Arias Ramírez is a former high official at Fenatrado, the infamous trucking union. Fenatrado has made a reputation for itself for the vandalic force it exercised to control and keep a monopoly of ground cargo in the Dominican Republic. Now Arias seems to be showing his true colors at the helm of the nation’s transport authority.
Intrant issued a communication urging Uber drivers to desist from offering services at Dominican airports to avoid confrontations with the tourist transport industry. The communication is published in a full page advertisement in the Diario Libre under the heading of the Tourism Cabinet. The Tourism Cabinet in the Dominican Republic is head by President Luis Abinader himself.
The note indicates: “The government urged Uber’s representative to stop all activities in airport environments and to inform all his associates of the need to not provide these services, until the regulatory status of the company is not clarified with the authorities.”
N Digital shares several comments on social media:
José Cruz, through his Instagram account expressed: ”This turns out to be a wrong action since the Uber company is more recognized worldwide and the rate of people who use it due to its reliability is quite high. Also a great part of the population who lost their jobs due to the pandemic, have opted for such work, becoming their main source of income.
Roberto Cuevas remarked: “When the head of the institution is a trade union activist that if what you can expect.”
David Peralta said: “The client should decide what service to use, not that it be imposed on him.”
