President Luis Abinader and First Lady Raquel Arbaje addressed the nation for Christmas on the evening of Wednesday, 23 December 2020. They called for Dominicans to take special care for themselves and their loved ones in these Covid-19 days.
“This way we will be able to see their smiles again. We will embrace each other again, we will regain our health”, said the President. He said Dominicans must be optimistic at these times when family and friends gather.
“Christmas has arrived, the time to celebrate as a family and share a message of hope with all humanity. Today I do not want to stop remembering those who are experiencing difficult health or economic situations. And those who are far from their homes and loved ones,” said the President.
“May this Christmas bring hope. On behalf of myself, Raquel and all our family, we wish God bless all the Dominican people, and a Christmas of peace, harmony, union and hope for the new year,” said the President in his message.
He added: “Two thousand years ago the situation was not ideal, either. The sacred family was experiencing a difficult situation. In the midst of the precariousness, Jesus was born. Christmas is a time when God is with us. That is our hope, that is our faith; we are not alone. No crisis can put out that flame of Bethlehem.
First Lady Raquel Arbaje also spoke. She said that this year, with all its challenges, has come to remind us that the most important thing we can offer others is our time.
“There is a Christmas carol that always moves me when I listen to it, “El Tamborilero.” It tells the story of a man who wants to give a gift that will please baby Jesus, but has nothing to offer but an old drum. He arrives in front of the Bethlehem manger, unsure if his gift will be enough and dedicates a love song in his honor to the child. The carol ends with the phrase “‘When God saw me playing before him, he smiled at me,'” recalls First Lady Raquel Arbaje.
