Punta Caucedo Multimodal Port received MSC Katrina, a ship loaded with 12,999 standard freight containers. DP World that manages the port says this is the largest ship ever received at the recently expanded port, the largest in the Dominican Republic.
The ship arrived with cargo from Portugal. DP World highlighted that the new infrastructure enables ships of this size to arrive to the port and from here cargo is distributed to the rest of the Caribbean. This is a positive step for the DP World port objective of becoming the main logistics hub in the Americas.
DP World recently completed a US$114 million investment to expand the pier and acquire sophisticated equipment. Caucedo Port added 450 linear meters of quay areas. The port increased its operating capacity from 1.2 million standard containers (TEUs) to 2.5 million TEUs a year. It now has 10 gantry cranes (five Super Post Panamax and five Post Panamax), 32 RTGs.
Morten Johansen, CEO of DP World, emphasized that the arrival of large capacity vessels increases the country’s competitiveness compared to other markets in the region and is a great opportunity for local and regional companies to set up manufacturing operations in the country.
