The Chamber of Deputies issued a note giving its position on the arrest on drug trafficking charges of ruling Modern Revolutionary Party deputy, Miguel Gutiérrez Díaz. Gutiérrez Díaz was arrested when arriving to Miami International Airport. A grand jury in Miami had indicted him on 11 March 2021. The arrest took place in coordination with Dominican and US law enforcement agencies.
“We inform the citizens and the media that the Chamber of Deputies will remain respectful of the investigation process and the measures taken by the corresponding bodies, following the law,” states a communication from the Chamber of Deputies published on Twitter. The Chamber of Deputies says that each legislator “owes their constituents and society; therefore they must respond responsibly for their actions. We reiterate our commitment to transparency, compliance with laws and ethical exercise.”
Gutiérrez won the deputy seat to represent the province of Santiago in the 7 July 2020 election. He received 21,177 votes and spent around RD$25-RD$30 million on his campaign with the backing of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).
As reported, Gutiérrez had average assistance to legislative sessions and kept a low profile. He has not presented legislative initiatives. He has presented himself as a strong religious supporter.
When asked, President Luis Abinader stated: “Each one is responsible for his deeds. Each one must pay for his deeds.”
