Aerodom announced that arrivals and departures were restored after 10pm at the Las Americas International Airport after the runway lighting system failed to adequately operate. Aerodom said that four flights were diverted to other airports.
A fight from San Juan returned to San Juan, a JetBlue flight landed instead in Santiago (Cibao Airport), an Iberia (Madrid) flight was sent to land in Punta Cana and a flight from St. Kitts and Nevis was sent to La Romana airport, said Luis Jose Lopez Mena, spokesman for the airport.
The airport installed emergency lights on the runway, after the runway’s electrical cables were missing, causing the failure of the runway’s lights. Authorities presume that the wiring was stolen, but are awaiting a full investigation. The cables were replaced by technical personnel as reported in Diario Libre.
