UNODC report on the Police in the Dominican Republic today

There is too much political interference in the Police and the entire force should be replaced or restructured in the next eight to 10 years, according to the findings of the diagnostic analysis carried out of the National Police in the Dominican Republic by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The Abinader administration created a task force to look into the reform of the Police. The task force contracted the UN agency study.

For years citizen’s negative perception of the Police has been worsening. In recent years, the number of Police involved in crime has increased. The Police is seen as a participant in crime or an accomplice to crime instead of a deterrent. The report also looks into the underfunding of the Police efforts to combat crime.

At the start of the Abinader administration, Police received a wage increase and access to housing plan and better health coverage.

Altagracia Salazar in Sin Maquillaje morning talk show highlighted how the largest number of Police staff is assigned to the special services division that sends the agents to protect important people.
