The Criminal Investigations Division of the National Police (Dicrim) says it is investigating the death of former president of the Senate Reynaldo Pared Perez in Juan Dolio on 28 October 2021. Reportedly, at the time of his death he was alone in the Juan Dolio apartment with his wife.
Early media reports indicated that Pared Perez committed suicide. The family, the Police or forensics have not given an official report.
N Digital reports on the funeral and refers to the death as “an apparent suicide.” Diario Libre also ends its report on the funeral concluded the same, that Pared Perez died “in an apparent suicide.”
Meanwhile, there is much speculation suicide may not have been the cause of the death. The position of the cadaver in the photo that was promptly released on social media shows there was no blood, and the gun with which Pared Perez supposedly killed himself is placed neatly beside his hand. The bullet that killed him did not leave his body. The bullet was to the torax, not to the head.
Pared Perez suffered from esophagus cancer, but recently his medical reports had been looking very good. Furthermore, his latest posts on social media and remarks of friends who had recently spoken to him deny do indicate he was depressed, and on the contrary are evidence of a person who had many plans with family and friends.
Pared Perez is the brother of Sigfrido Pared Perez who for many years served as director of the National Department of Investigations (DNI) and Carlos Pared Perez, personal assistant to former President Danilo Medina.
In 2020, when serving as secretary general of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Pared Perez split with then President Danilo Medina when the later backed Gonzalo Castillo for PLD presidential candidate. Pared Perez had aspired to be the presidential candidate for the party, or that independent polls decide on the presidential candidate for the then ruling party. In 2019, Pared Perez’s wife, Ingrid Mendoza had announced that she backed Leonel Fernandez’s aspirations to return to the presidency, and not those of her husband.
Pared Perez was a former long-time president of the Senate and secretary general of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD). He was 65 years old. In March 2020 he had been diagnosed with esophagus cancer.
He served as president of the Senate from 2006 to 2015 and from 2016 to 2020. During those years he also served as secretary general of the Dominican Liberation Party.
President Luis Abinader attended the wake on Saturday, 30 October 2021. Both former Presidents, Leonel Fernandez (1998-2000, 2004-2008, 2008-2012) and Danilo Medina (2012-2016, 2016-2020) also attended and coincided at the funeral services.
