Anti-Corruption and Procurement agencies look into possible fraud at Dominican mail agency

To laugh or cry. Nuria Piera’s Saturday on Colorvisión (Channel 9) and Monday on CDN (Channel 37) investigative report revealed major violations in government contracting. Where were the controls of the government?

The investigative reporter looked into the deal signed by Adan Peguero for the Dominican Postal Institute (Inposdom) with MiaCargo, a door-to-door courier company owned by Argentinian businessman Diego Vestillero. who is being tried in Argentina for a major cargo contraband case. Peguero admitted during the interview he was aware of the criminal charges regarding the Argentine businessman. The businessman is accused of transporting 76 freight containers and a cargo worth US$20 million in violation with Customs laws in Argentina, as reported in Clarin, the Argentinian newspaper.

The Procurement Agency (DGCP) anti-fraud unit announced on Monday it would investigate the contracting model used by Inposdom to work with Mia Cargo.

Likewise, the Attorney General’s Anti-Administrative Corruption Agency (Pepca) also announced it would investigate the situations presented in the investigative report for violations of the Public-Private Alliance Law 47-20 and the Procurement Law 340-06.

The Dominican Association of Courier Companies (Asodec) is concerned that MiaCargo could enjoy special Customs Agency privileges.

Inposdom is a division of the Ministry of Public Works.

Peguero is the president of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) in Santo Domingo East.
