Eric Adams meets President Abinader, visits the Senate

Wearing a guayabera, mayor-elect of New York City, Eric Adams met with President Luis Abinader on 8 November 2021. President Abinader hosted Eric Adams for a lunch at the Presidential Palace. As reported by the Presidency, Adams spoke at the meeting of his determination to collaborate with the DR, motivated by what Dominicans represent here and in New York City.

President Abinader expressed hopes for special relations with the city of New York, today the second largest in Dominican population, only after Greater Santo Domingo.

The President says in a press release that Adams expressed his interest in increasing cultural collaboration and training for Dominican police officers in New York City police academies. Adams is a former New York City police captain.

The Presidency said there is the intent to take actions to increase trade and investment between New York City and the Dominican Republic.

“For us, New York City is very special because of the number of Dominicans living there. It is the most important minority in terms of population and origin in the city of New York and the mayor-elect received the support of this immense majority of Dominicans. He promised that his first visit would be to the Dominican Republic. And here he is, keeping his word,” said Abinader.

The President was accompanied by Foreign Relations Minister Roberto Álvarez; the Administrative Secretary of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza; the Consul General of the Dominican Republic in New York, Eligio Jáquez; the Secretary General of the Dominican Municipal League, Víctor D’Aza, and the senator for the Espaillat province, Carlos Gómez.

Also in attendance as part of the delegation were Ydanys Rodríguez, New York City Councilman and Hispanic campaign manager; Henry Garrido, executive director of District Council 37, the largest municipal employee union in NYC; and Aneiry Batista, chief of staff for Congressman Adriano Espaillat.

In addition, Henry Garrido, Ingrid P. Martin, Jose Peralta, Brianna Suggs, Winnie Greco and Fausto Garcia.

Adams had previously met in Santiago with the Mayor of Santiago, Abel Martinez. In Santiago, he also met with the business leaders. He then visited the Senate in Santo Domingo, where he was hosted by Eduardo Estrella (Dominicanos por el Cambio-Santiago), president of the Senate. As reported in Hoy, Mayor-elect Adams told the senators: “”Your problems are my problems, we share the same concerns. You will have a mayor in New York City who understands the power of this great country and together as partners we will begin the process of success. Thank you for allowing me to be here.”

Senate president Eduardo Estrella said that with Adams’ knowledge, “we are going to achieve a lot in terms of citizen security.” “For us it is a great honor to have him here. We also feel very grateful for the welcome they have given to the Dominicans in New York City; we have no way to repay them for this gesture,” said the Senate president.

Eric Adams will be the 110th mayor of New York, according to the city’s Board of Elections. In his campaign speeches, he promised to unite the city, which is populated by citizens from at least 150 countries. It is estimated that more than one million Dominicans live there.
