Filming crews caused havoc in Santo Domingo’s Piantini neighborhood and environs this Wednesday, 15 December 2021. The crews were shooting the Netflix TV show Suriname. One of its leads, Park Hace-soo worked in the hugely popular series Squid Game, which is famous worldwide, and has an assured role in the Korean version of The Paper House.

Suriname is based on the true story of a South Korean man who becomes a drug lord. It takes place in Suriname in 2008. The plot tells about how after moving to Suriname in search of a better life, In-Gu Kang loses all his money when he gets involved with Yo-Hwan Jeon, one of the most feared drug trafficking kingpins in South America.

Seeking revenge, In-Gu becomes a double police agent to unmask his former colleague.

Many commented on social media that the filming should have been scheduled for a peaceful Sunday and not on a Wednesday in December to worsen the nightmarish traffic jams. The filming affecting commutes in the area of the Rafael Augusto Sanchez and Freddy Prestol Castillo streets. The National Transit and Transport Institute (Intrant) argued that the inconveniences were a small price to pay for the country’s exposure as a film site. An estimated 100 Dominicans are working on the series in the Dominican Republic.

Thanks to the huge popularity of Korean series on Netflix around the world, director Jong-bin Yoon hopes that the film whose working name is “Suriname” will arouse immense interest from international audiences.

Yoon Jong-bin has become one of the most influential directors working in today’s Korean film industry. He has been invited twice to Cannes with his films and his worldwide recognition is steadily growing.

Other productions filmed this year in the Dominican Republic are Paramount Pictures’ The Lost City of D, starring Sandra Bullock, Amazon’s high-end television series Boundless, with Rodrigo Santoro. Also Spanish-language productions Croma Kid and la Encomienda, and many others. Because of the variety of locations and the incentives in the national film incentives laws, the country is increasingly becoming a popular film location site.
