One of three children impacted by a SUV and a hit-and-run driver in Santa Fe, San Pedro de Macoris, is back at home after recovering from injuries. His brother did not make it. The children were returning home after baseball practice.
Yeferson Novel, 6 years old, was discharged from the hospital last Friday. He has several marks on his body and about 20 stitches on his head due to the blows he received during the accident.
Angie Novel, the child’s aunt, told Diario Libre: “The boy misses his little brother quite a lot, they are children who did not leave their homes and future ball players, thank God we did not lose them all, it has been something very difficult for us.”
The deaths of 7-year old Yeremi Novel, and 5-year old Carlos José Nova, are attributed to reckless driving and occurred on 27 January 2022. The children were walking home after baseball practice with their father when they were hit by the vehicle.
A video that captured the moments of the accident shows that, after the impact, the person who accompanied the supposedly woman driver dismounted, and took the wheel of the SUV as both fled leaving the children abandoned on the road.
The person who is responsible for killing two children and seriously wounding a third, after running them over in San Pedro de Macoris, allegedly fled to Puerto Rico, according to the Southeast Regional sub-director of the Police, Jose Delio Mora Reynoso.
The family says the Police has the vehicle. Clari Marte, mother of the late Yeremi and Yeferson Novel, told Diario Libre: “We don’t want the SUV. We want those who are responsible to be arrested.” She says the authorities are dillydallying on the case. She says the National Police has all the evidence to arrest the people. “They have not been arrested, because the Police has not wanted to arrest them,” she told Diario Libre.
Almost two weeks after the unfortunate accident happened, the authorities found the whereabouts of the black 2014 Toyota Runner abandoned in the community of Los Hatillos, in the province of Hato Mayor, according to the deputy director of the Southeast region of the National Police, Colonel Jose Rafael Gomez Fernandez. The officer assured the Diario Libre reporter that the investigation continues. He said the case will be solved as soon as possible.
