It is getting harder to steal cell phones in the DR

The Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel) announces that as of 9 March 2022, the Denied Series System goes into effect. The system was installed to block mobile devices that have been reported as stolen, lost or whose IMEI has been altered or duplicated both in the country and in the international database of the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA).

This measure goes into effect through Resolution No. 041-2020 of the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel). Indotel highlights that the new regulation seeks to safeguard the security of users, reduce the theft of mobile equipment, reduce the opportunities for the purchase and sale of irregular phones, and contribute to a safer telecommunications sector.

Service providers will now implement the mechanisms for control and access of equipment to the mobile service using the Centralized Data Base where the IMEI or unique serial number of each cell phone is registered, both nationally and in the international database of the GSMA.

The devices within this system have been reported as stolen or lost, and those whose IMEI has been altered or duplicated.

For mobiles with duplicate or altered IMEI, carriers will notify the user through an SMS message with the procedure to follow to evaluate the case. While those mobiles reported as stolen or lost will be blocked immediately.

Users who wish to consult the IMEI of their equipment can access Indotel’s web portal www.gsma.indotel.gob.do. To find out the IMEI number, dial *#06# on the cell phone and the serial number of the equipment will appear on the screen.
