
The Ministry of Environment has recruited Induban, the leading Dominican coffee company, to help with the conservation of the Baní Dunes, a protected area in the southcentral Peravia province.
The Ministry of the Environment and Industrias Banilejas (Induban) signed an agreement to protect and improve the control and surveillance in the natural monument Dunas de las Calderas or Dunas de Baní.
Induban will contribute to the construction of four surveillance new surveillance centers and a front gate to the Dunes Visitor Center, new bathrooms, ticketing office and other improvements.
“We, unquestionably, what we do, we do for the country and for the province of Peravia, Baní. Baní needs collaboration for the protection of the dunes, the rivers and the environment. For us this support is a commitment that we are going to give and always count on the company. The future lies in the environment,” said the president of Industrias Banilejas, Manuel Pozo Perelló.
The Induban support for improved surveillance is in addition to its contribution to an environmental awareness program in the south central province with educational talks on the preservation and protection of natural monuments with the support of the Perelló Cultural Center in Baní. This program will help bring environmental education to the community on the importance of protecting natural resources and value this area, home to about 124 species from 40 families.
The Ministry of Environment has declared the province of Peravia to be of high environmental importance, including the Natural Monument Dunas de Las Calderas and other protected areas located in this region.
For years, the Dunes have been a target of unscrupulous people who have found in it an easy source of income through illegal sand extraction.
About the Dunes
The Dunes of Las Calderas Natural Monument was created by Decree No. 233-96 and incorporated into the National System of Protected Areas (SINAP). It has an area of 20 square kilometers (20km²).
