the residents are already there, maybe hard rock should pick up less congested spot to build in and create entirely new neighbourhood of high rise hotels, casinos and similar developments?

I know the perfect spot. A 20 story hotel on the corner of the malecon and maximo gomez!

Why are people opposed to a casino? Is it a morality thing? Do they think it attracts bad people or something like that?

Negative impacts include an increase in criminal activities, social deviations such domestic violence, divorce, bankruptcy, drug and alcohol abuse, risky or illicit sexual behavior (especially prostitution), and problem gambling, loss of property value, and impoverishment. The proposed Hard Rock Hotel & Casino entertainment complex includes a large slot machine area, with state-of-the-art machines that are known to be highly addictive.

The promoters have said they are interested in building a destination project for city residents. Take note the casino will be almost as big as their operation in Las Vegas. Already in the Dominican Republic the main clients of locally operating casinos are Dominicans.

A search online on "impact of casinos on a city" will bring up lots of information on the negative impacts.

An article in The Atlantic summarizes it for the United States.

all of the above. my understanding is that the neighbours are worried that gambling is closely followed by other vices: prostitution, alcoholism, drugs and violence.

personally i feel tourism generally attracts some bad behaviour. there is a reason why tourist oriented altagracia is one of the provinces with high crime rate.

During the community meeting, the site where the abandoned Hotel Hispaniola and the Hotel Santo Domingo are located was mentioned. Besides the Hotel Hispaniola there is a large casino. Nevertheless the Hispaniola and the Santo Domingo hotels have been closed for years.

From my personal knowledge, Punta Cana area in La Altagracia has one of the lower crime rates. People say it is because of low unemployment rate.

I don't think tourism generally attracts bad behaviour. But probably that would be the subject of another thread.

Alll one has to do is take a drive down Lincoln, Churchill or Tiradentes at 11 o'clock at night to see the kind of riff-raff would increase one hundredfold if this casino goes up.

It's easy to imagine how drug dealing among the "hijos de mami y papi" and prostitution would take off. It's already bad in those areas.

I am no SDO expert but there are casinos all along the Malecon in the hotels, a bunch of them.
Are there problems with bad and illegal behavior there. Girls looking for Johns would be present
in any tourist area regardless of a casino imho.

Different situation, no residential area on the Malecon side.

Besides the mentioned issues, myself I wouldn't be happy with neon signs, arriving and leaving cars until 2 am, traffic jams, etc.

OK it is currently a residential area. Does the project conflict with zoning regulations?

Yes. It is a "morality thing"

Why are people opposed to a casino? Is it a morality thing? Do they think it attracts bad people or something like that?

Would you want a casino in your neighborhood? And, if you need to ask if it is a "morality thing"? You just do not get it

Yes there is a casino 3 blocks from where I live. No problems. Might be different issues in DR IDK.

Rebuilding after Katrina in Biloxi Mississippi those condos built in the same blocks as Casinos brought 50% more than a few blocks away

I believe if you saw first hand the area where they want to build the casino and the traffic mess that already exists you would be more sympathetic towards the residents.

I know my two pesos don't count but I hope it never gets built in that area.
