This is just a friendly reminder that the annual Latin Grammy awards live from MSG in New York City is this Thursday, Nov 2, 2006 @ 7PM on Univision.
For those of us who are true fans of Latin music it's an opportunity to see spectacular live performances of some of the contemporary greats and if we are lucky some legendary artists too.
I enjoy the Latin Grammy awards for the live performances by artists in various musical categories. As well, there is always a nice tribute to a few artists who I wish to never forget because of their contributions to Latin music.
This year will be the first time it's held in NYC and I anticipate a top of the line show and performances by various artists.
There will be a tribute to "la salsa neoyorkina" which is where salsa originated. The performance will be by no other than the great Willie Colón and Gilberto Santa Rosa, Andy Montañez, la India and a few others. Other performances include reggaeton and one by Juan Luis Guerra.
As for the awards well we know it's fixed so my hopes are not high for my preferred artists but my prediction is that Shakira will be popular with a few awards. However, it will be interesting nevertheless to hear the nominations for categories like: best tropical album, best merengue album, best salsa album etc. because these genres have been struggling over the years and the groups that are producing great music IMO are not promoted in this realm.
For example a salsa group that has been producing classic Puerto Rican/ Colombian style salsa is Orquesta Tabaco y Ron. I have never heard them mentioned at all in these award shows but they have great albums on the market. At least I sure have been enjoying their rhythms as well as those of a few other similar style groups.
I guess we'll have to wait and see. Dominican artists don't get much recognition in the Latin Grammy Awards except for JLG.
