"Cuesta" is more expensive than "Plaza Lama, La Sirena, with only a small selection.
CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

The number of batteries only extend the time you can use the invertor.
The size of the invertor is the important factor in your equation.

Yes, ours does, but we needed to get a 3k+ inverter for it. With 4 batteries. Never out of juice.

I am not sure where they are from but some of this is assuming you are from the US.

This seems to be talked about a lot on this forum. Things are more expensive here. Some people import their stuff. It will be sticker shock to see how much more most things cost here and there is less of a selection. There is an IKEA in Santo Domingo but a lot of people do not seem to like the quality. Some say do not buy from IKEA. There is a place called Pricesmart which is kind of like Costco. You can look at the Pricesmart website for the dominican republic.

Not everything is in stock in Pricesmart. Some of the things you have to order. But you can look online and convert to US dollars (43 to 1) and check on some prices.

A dominican style stove and fridge will be a lot smaller and stuff you probably haven't seen before. An american style stove and fridge will cost a lot more. Televisions will cost more and might be an older model.

I just got a sony 40 inch LED 1080p with a free blue ray party from La Sirena. We got it on sale and it was 28,000 pesos ($651 US) for the TV and the blue ray player. The TV was normally 33,000 ($767 US) by itself. If La Sierana has a sell on electronics it seems to be a pretty good price. I bought a 46 inch samsung for $1000 when it was on sale.

I think La Sirena also competes with fridges, stoves, A/C units if it is on sale. Pricesmart might have a larger selection with electronics. Every so often you find something that cost the same at the US or not much more.

Domincan furniture is a little different and more expensive. Depends want you want but the local furniture is different from the US. It will cost more and might not be what you want. I would plan carefully and carry some stuff on the plane. A first class seat might be worth the extra money if they let you check three 70 lbs bags. American Airlines let you check that but make sure it is not over the 70 lbs.

Other people should other suggestions for stores. I would say pricesmart is worth a visit. We bought nice folding chairs, folding tables, plastic cups, glasses, towels, knives, sheets, pillows, almonds, olive oil, trash bags, etc. Of course you can buy the bulk items.

If you have a smart phone with a sim card have it unlocked. You can use your AT&T or Tmobile smartphone unlocked and use it here. You just put in your DR sim card. I know AT&T now officially unlocked your smartphone when it is out of contract. I normally bring used iPhones every time I come down here. Bring any laptops, tablets, hard drives , etc from the US.

Actually the prices are not that bad.
I am comparing them to our Canadian prices.
From what I have seen this what we should expect:

Fridge = $600
Stove = $600
Washer/dryer = $1000
Dining table 6 chairs = $250
Sofa bed = $700
King size bed = 1000
Tv stand = 200
TV = 700

Do you think these are reasonable prices?? We don't need super fancy furniture or appliances.
We will probably bring smaller items with us.

Do not buy an american brand stove! They have a oven gas safety feature, that is electric controlled, no electricity and you will not be able to use the oven!! LG brand is better than most of the rest for stove, fridge, washer TV etc.

If you don't mind smaller appliances you will save money. TV price is right for a 40 inch or so. I bought a used american washing machine. The small dominican style ones you basically wash your close then put them in. It is a lot more work. Just make sure it isn't a washing machine like that. We do not have a dryer. Most people hang their clothes to dry but a dryer would be nice. Of course the is the choice of gas or electric. Do you think you will have power outages where you are moving?

TV stand sounds about right. Not sure if you want to mount it on the wall or not. You can find the mounts to mount TV's on the wall here at pricesmart and la sirena.

Dining table and chairs sounds cheaper then I would of thought. But if you are seeing a picture of it and you like it then that sounds like a good deal. Not sure if you are including the price of mattresses or how picky you are with mattresses. Our mattress is ok but not great.

The cheaper gas stoves seem to work fine. The dominican cook with gas and cook a lot. They do not seem to use the oven near as much. So I am not sure how well the over works. We had a cheaper fridge and I am not sure how old it was. But it the freezer sections wasn't cold enough. I think for $600 it would not be a big fridge but would be a good fridge.

I think everyone drinks bottled water and they have the 5 gallon bottles delivered to their house. I would have one water dispenser and two water bottle. Here the deliver them fast for 55 pesos. I am guessing this applies for all of the DR. You can buy a water dispenser with a small fridge at the bottom if you want.

I would probably put a surge protector on all your appliances and electronics.

Ikea stuff is often made of particle board. Like all particle board, it is made of sawdust and resin and has a tendency to turn to oatmeal if it gets wet. Keep in mind that most Dominican houses have tile floors, and the way Dominicans clean such floors is to flood them daily with a water/ Clorox/ Mistolin mixture, swab it around and then mop it up. This should make for really clean floors, but has disadvantages. For example, it means that your particle board furniture, if not elevated an inch or so, will get wet and slowly, slowly mushroom out at the bottom. In four or five years, it will probably need to be replaced. One trick is to elevate it with strips of wood, and another is to paint the bottom inch or so with urethane, which will waterproof it a bit.

I'm looking at having a wooden dining table done somewhere in Santo Domingo. How much should I be expecting to pay roughly, and any recommended places to have it done?

Anywhere from not much to a very large amount based upon your detailed description of what you desire.

Please be more specific.

winde is right, you need to know exactly what you want. Look through magazines/catalogs and find what you like, then call a few guys to get prices. Be specific what kind of wood you want. A Dominican we know does beautiful work, and speaks English, he makes residential furniture and also builds tables and chairs for casinos throughout the island, he's not a hack. He lives in SD and his workshop is near Boca Chica, call him if you're interested: Plutarco Suazo 809-324-6110. Tell him Nany gave you his number.

Thank you for your reply and also for the number. To be honest I don't even know very exactly myself what I want, what type of wood etc. Something like this for 6, length of the table 2 meters and something.

I would recommend caoba/mahogany or andiroba, as they will not be bothered by termites. It can be stained any color you like, it doesn't have to be dark.

Ask him to bring photos of tables he's made

they call that a 'Parson's ' table.. the style
and the picture is of a BIG one.... that will be almost 8ft long (3 chairs side by side) and is WIDE... nowhere near touching when tucked in

2M should be fine for you.... just line up the chairs and measure
