The system is set up to keep the people ignorant, half those teaching are not capable of thinking within -the- box, never mind out -of-the-box. This way those politicians can do as they please without the people complaining or crimping their style.

According to the World Bank, The DR is privileged to share with Nicaragua, the two first places in Latin America with the highest secondary (high) school desertion rate.

What kind of a revolution?

That's why I think only if a revolution happens, can we hope for things to change in this country.

You know, it's rather perplexing that the country of Cuba has one of the highest literacy rates in the entire world yet it's doubtful their standard of living is any better than that of illiterate Dominicana!.. Go figure!!

I'm not too sure it would be much worse, health care, education and all. And considering you know, the embargo, with what should be their natural trading partner, I think they're doing alright.

A socialist revolution. I would be all for it if one day Castro or Chavez decides to invade the DR. I think our country will have dignity and our people will have what we really need : Education and Healthcare.

The way I think about the future of DR, is that we will either have a Pinochet or a Castro to strengthen things up.

What I'm alluding to is the fact that education alone does not guarantee prosperity.
Funnyvale's comment about a "revolution" brought to mind the fiasco that the communist system is. It does, however, has it's good aspects. If we had Cuba's educational and health care systems in place, DR's GNP could be the highest in Latin America.

Dude, which is more important: 1) education/healthcare or 2) freedom? How many thousands did Castro butcher and imprison for the last 45+ years before the population became tranquil?

I hope dv8 weighs in with her opinions. SHE grew up under Communism.

Too much freedom is a bad thing, IMO at least for our culture, since it's so corrupted. Our people NEED to be controlled so that we can rescue the little that is left of our society.

Too much freedom is bad? It's part of the human makeup to be free.

IMO, too little freedom is a bad thing.

And WHO gets to be the one on top to tell others how to live? What qualifications? How does he/she arise to such lofty power? Who gets to pass judgement on how "society" should be "rescued"?

Did it ever occur to you that folks who have been in virtual bondage for centuries have to learn how to be free, and it takes many years to figure it out?

Leave the concept of freedom for people who know how to handle it (Americans/Europeans) people that more or less don't abuse freedom. We Dominicans (I am not speaking about Latin Americans in general) need a jefe that would keep people under control, at least for now, someone like Castro.

When you read, every day in the press, that a politician or a government leader is stealing away the little that a country has, I think its far better the option of communism.

The Embargo is only the Americans, not the rest of the world , been there many times, have relatives there. Workers paridise lost #2, USSR was numbero uno. No, the blame is all Castro's.

So, you belive you need another mano duro. Bullsh-t, you need people that make their government accountable. Say no, to corruption. Saying no is easy, the more you practise it the easier it gets. After my wife went to Cuba the first time, after hearing about this wonderful paridise from her professors at UASD, she saw first hand the reality of Cuba. She then realized that the DR, warts and all, at least was free. The value of freedom is not known, until you no longer have it.

Funnyyale, if you think influence peddling and corruption is the sole legacy of capitalism, you may want to check out the news item about this Chinese high-ranking official executed for just that!

A socialist system isn't immune to it. Stealing is everywhere. The only difference is how much and what percentage of those in charge are doing so.

Bringing in a totalitarian or "mano dura" like Chavez, will not solve anything. In fact, it will make things worse for DR.

Our little nation may not be doing well enough as it is, but at least it's headed in the right direction. We need to push for more freedom and government reforms. We need to strengthen our laws and our judiciary system so that when one is convicted of a crime, He pays in full for his crime.

The only "strong men/women" I care for, are those behind their benches in a court of law.

I am not Dominican (yet ). But ^^^this^^^ is the way to do it. Each election cycle, make things a little better. Make government more accountable. Strengthen the judiciary to become fair according to the law and predictable, continuing purging the police/military of corruption, emphasize education and healthcare and progress will continue to be made.

Won't be done overnight.

Not ALL gringos...not even a fraction...think things are so bad in the DR.

The world is always changing. The DR is growing up, and sometimes that is painful.

Ese "cambio" que tu quieres no tiene sentido comun. Tu quieres comunismo y eso nunca a sido la solucion a problemas que tenga el capitalismo.
Y a donde a triunfado el socialismo? bajate de esa nube compai!

Look what happened/is happening in Russia, ask a West German what it takes/is taking to integrate the East Germans into a free society.

Like the man said keep electing people that will try to follow the law and strengthen the judical system.
