Young people seek seats in Congress; many are offspring of long-term politicians

Hundreds of descendants of politicians are attracted to pursue careers in politics. El Dia reports on the many 20-30 olds who seek to win seats in the upcoming congressional election scheduled for 19 May 2024.

Among the relatives of leading politicians that are now running are:

Omar Fernandez, son of former President Leonel Fernandez, who is running for the senate seat for the National District. A graduate of law from the PUCMM, he was not known to have held other positions in government before winning the deputy seat in the 2020 election. He is running for the People’s Force.

Charlie Mariotti is the son of the secretary general of the former ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD). He seeks a deputy position for the PLD.
