Young people seek seats in Congress; many are offspring of long-term politicians

Hundreds of descendants of politicians are attracted to pursue careers in politics. El Dia reports on the many 20-30 olds who seek to win seats in the upcoming congressional election scheduled for 19 May 2024.

Among the relatives of leading politicians that are now running are:

Omar Fernandez, son of former President Leonel Fernandez, who is running for the senate seat for the National District. A graduate of law from the PUCMM, he was not known to have held other positions in government before winning the deputy seat in the 2020 election. He is running for the People’s Force.

Charlie Mariotti is the son of the secretary general of the former ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD). He seeks a deputy position for the PLD.

Carlos Alberto Amarante García is a graduate of engineering and the son of Carlos Amarante, a former Minister of Education and Minister of Interior and Police during PLD governments. He seeks to be reelected deputy for Espaillat province.

Angel Estevez Estevez, is the son of former minister of Environment and Agriculture during the Danilo Medina (PLD) administration. He is listed on Linked In as the president of Comesa, the family business that imports and distributes agrochemicals. He seeks to be reelected for the La Vega province.

Eddy Montas is a nephew of Temistocles Montas, the former Minister of Economy and acting president for the PLD.

Vicente Sanchez Henriquez, running for the PRM, is the son of Vicente Sanchez Baret, former senator, and his mother Yadira Henriquez, director of the social plan of the Presidency.

Heidy María Musa is the niece of a former Puerto Plata mayor. She seeks to be elected deputy for the PLD.

Charleen Canaan is the daughter of a former legislator who was named to the position when her father died. She is also the vice president of operators for Salcedo Cargo Express. She is running for the People’s Force for Espaillat province.
