After having dirt streets for 19½ years they paved the streets in our "top of the hill" part of the barrio and re-paved all the other streets in our barrio the last couple weeks.

This seems to be happening in many cities and towns in the DR. I think this is more a directive from the government in Santo Domingo, than it is a credit to any local ladrone. How much money destined for road work is still being pocketed by the local governments?

PLEASE, VOTERS IN THE POLL ABOVE SHOULD EITHER LIVE IN SANTIAGO OR VISITED SANTIAGO AFTER ABEL MARTINEZ BECAME MAYOR. EVERYONE ELSE SHOULD ABSTAIN FROM VOTING UNTIL YOU VISIT THE CITY.

A few months ago Abel Martínez became the new major of Santiago de los Caballeros.

As is the case with politicians, he made many promises during his electoral campaign and people put faith in what he promised.

Now, less than a year, many people have good things to say about his way of ruling in Santiago. The biggest change that most people are noticing is how markedly cleaner the city looks and feels.

What's the verdict among DR1ers? Is Abel Martínez the best thing to happen to Santiago?

There's no question he's a much better mayor than the previous one, but is he positioning himself as among the best ever in Santiago?

He is positioning himself for a run for President in the next election. Yes Santiago is cleaner now

^^ Could be, but he's not the only one positioning for a run for the presidency.

He's doing a very good job while most of the others attempting to position themselves to put their buns on the ultimate chair on the land are not quite doing what Martínez has done and is doing in Santiago. Quite frankly, a Abel Martínez (as he is now) is what the DR needs on a nationwide scale. He gets things done and quite well.

This is just a lot of grandstanding....as it is there are other legal means at the government's disposal that be can use to punishing tax evaders....

A new fun program that aims to remind drivers of the importance of respecting pedestrians at crosswalks has been put in place by the government of the city of Santiago.

The blue signs the guys carry says "Respect Pedestrians" and "Be a Hero."

If he runs for president, I don't think he'll ru in the next elections, but rather in 2024. Anyways, I completely agree with you that this country needs an Abel in the Palacio Nacional.

Drove back from the capitol yesterday and happy to be back home in Santiago. The mayor is doing a great job in areas that effect people's day to day lives.
If I could vote, he would have mine.

Ahem...

You do have to wonder if these companies are also charging ITBIS (sales tax) to customers and then pocketing the money.

I wonder how much it costs to print those signs?

Speaking of tax evasion, yesterday in the morning show El Día the Director of the DGII (Dominican IRS) said that ITBIS (sales tax) evasion is at 40%. This means that 40% of formal businesses that charge the sales tax to consumers don't give the money to the DGII, but instead pocket the extra money. He also said that the lowest evasion of ITBIS has been was 30%, which I think is still high.

Personal income tax evasion is OVER 60%! Keep in mind that poor people don't earn enough to qualify for personal income tax, so these are middle class people and up that are simply not paying their taxes.

These are evasions to the national government, there are taxes owed to certain cities and towns too, as is the case with Santiago.

With so much tax evasion and people want the government to give them smooth roads, state of the art schools, first world type hospitals, a well paid and functioning police force...

The mayor of Santiago is doing the right thing. I hope it has the desired effect.

Apparently only two companies have yet to approach city hall:

Provocon VI
Kelvin Car Wash

Able Martinez also said that there are hundreds of companies not paying their taxes. Its probable new signs of shame will be going up and new names added to the current sign.
