In www.barcelo.com, I got a very interesting discount for the Barcelo Lina in Santo Domingo U$S 30 for 2 (my husband and me). I?don?t know the hotel, we are arriving the 18 of May.
Try!

Is anyone familiar wiht Hotel Caribe?o? I've read they charge about US$35.00 for a room and they have a pool. Don't know how safe the area is at night. I know it's located on the intersection of two major avenues. 27 de Febrero and forgot the name of the other one.

That hotel is located at the intersection of Duarte & 27 de Febrero...AKA Duarte con Paris. I do not recommend that area.

For a few extra bucks you could stay at the Hotel Riazor($50 a night or so). It is located on Ave Independencia close to the Hotel Jaraqua. The rooms are clean and they have excellent security. The family that owns the hotel also owns Manolo, a 24 hour restaurant next to the hotel. Free breakfast is included.

The Caribeno is not walking distance from anything you want to see. From the Riazor you can walk to the Colonial Zone and several casinos/restaurants.

Duarte con Paris, at any time of the day, is not recommended for those who are not streetwise.

The Hotel Riazor number is (809) 685-5566.

I remember the Hotel Lina many years ago was one of the finest in Santo Domingo. The last time I was there - 2001 - It was showing it's age. The Restaurant was very good.

I disagree that the Barcelo Lina is in a dangerous area. It is one block north of the Cultural Center and two blocks from the National Police headquarters. If you are planning on going a lot to the museums in the Cultural Center, or to the National Theater, etc.. then its a great location. Its a bit far to walk to the Colonial Zone, thought definitely you could do it if you are a walker and the heat's not too bad. I would be careful walking at night certainly, but you could say that in any area of the city. All in all, the Lina is not in what I would consider a dangerous area.

I stayed at the Casona Dorada for 5 days last month(April). Very nice and reasonable, but I forgot the prices(too many presidentes-everything is still a blur). They have a small pool, a restaurant and a bar/disco.
I got a HUGE room with a view of the front street. Despite this it was very quiet. The bathroom was very big and comfortable and it had a jacuzzi. Also had a king-size bed.
The staff were also very friendly. The night desk clerk, Kelly, was very gracious and helped me get around at night. If you need to take a cab ask the front desk to hook you up with Guillermo, one of the few cabbies that did'nt try to rob me when I went out at night.

If you decide on the Duque De Wellington, you can have Martin from the hotel pick you up at the airport. He is a very nice guy and even though I did not stay there when I was there, we hung out and he took me all over Santo Domingo to get a taste of real city life outside of the tourist areas. Just in case it was'nt obvious, Martin does works at the Duque and he picks people up at the airport if you need this service from the hotel.

Sorry all, my misunderstanding - I thought that someone said the Barcelo was in a bad area, when it was the Hotel Caribeno they were referring to. The Barcelo is in a safe area!!

Juancarlos, the Hotel Caribeno at Duarte and 27 de Febero is not a safe area! For $35 you can stay in Gascue (Danae, Residence, Esmeralda, or for about $40 a night at the Wellington or Venecia). You could even stay in the Colonial Zone at the Condo Parque for $35. But I would not stay at the Caribeno, for that price or for any other! There are so many other choices at that price point and that neighborhood is just not safe at night at all.

I just wanted to add that I just got back from a few days in Sto Dgo and stayed in Hotel La Danae (Calle Danae # 18 in Gazcue) and was VERY impressed with it for the money. Previously I had stayed in Hotel La Gran Mansion (cheaper than the other hotels on that street, but if you're willing to spend about $5-10 more a night you can get a much nicer room elsewhere). I have also stayed at Hotel Residencia on that same street, which costs the same (more or less) as La Danae.

La Danae was CLEAN, seemed quieter than Residencia and the people working there were very nice. We paid 1000 pesos a night for a room on the second floor, right by the balcony (rooms on the first floor were 900 pesos). There's a.c. that you can control, cable, and hot water. There's also a mini-fridge in your room. Seriously, I had the best experience that I have had out of all of the Gazcue - Calle Danae hotels. My only complaint: the pillows there weren't so great. But EVERYTHING else was great.

One other issue though with Calle Danae in general is that a lot of taxistas in Sto Dgo aren't familiar with the street (unless they deal with tourists a lot). However, it is between Delgado and Pasteur, which are common roads. Just watch out for the mess of one way roads getting there :)

I agree with your post 100%. I have stayed at danae a few times and wind up staying at residencia more often, but that is because I actually prefer the activity around residencia etc.

Danae has nicer rooms and is definitely quieter. That may be a plus for most people. I like sitting out front and shooting the breeze with fellow guests etc. and also can sleep through almost anything so the added noise at residencia is not as much of a negative with me as it would be for many people.

One more advantage of Danae is they have phones in the rooms. You need to buy calling cards to dial cell numbers or long distance but local calls are free.

They were working on getting internet at one point but am not sure if they ever did.

I was asked about guest-friendly inexpensive hotels in Santo Domingo. I said "I have no idea, but I will see if it has been mentioned on DR1"... I saw this thread recently opened and at least discussing the inexpensive hotels - would these also be considered "guest-friendly" (and yes, I know what it means, which is why I do not think their websites are going to show that info) - so if any body knows, please jump in with info.

El Se?orial on Presidente Burgos in Gascu?, the medical area, just next to the Colonial Zone, short walk to the Malec?n, Swiss owned.

Several more are also one block west on Danai, north side of Independ?ncia. Around the corner from Duque de Wellington. But no free breakfast and no restaurant.

I spent a few days at Hotel Portes 9 (formerly Coco Boutique Hotel?) in January - my room was clean, furniture, linens and everything in the bathroom appeared to be new or at least very well kept. The Queen room contained a wardrobe, small table/set of chairs + extra bed. I was disappointed that the only window looked out onto the wall of a stairway but it wasn't a big deal.

A/C, wifi and cable TV were included and they gave me a couple bottles of water every day. My room was one level up from the lobby and the wifi signal strength was just barely strong enough to reach the front door - other guests had to sit in the lobby to use the Internet. Customer service was great - quick check-in/out, towels replaced regularly, etc. I regret not waking up early enough to try the free breakfast because the reviews were all very positive.

I thought the location was great (between Calle Las Damas and Isabel La Catolica): there's a small park out front (Plaza Pellerano Castro) and Fortaleza Ozama is right around the corner - a great place to begin a walking tour of all the historic sites.

I paid in cash, about $50/night.

Maison Gautreux is a good hotel, half a block from the Malecon and the Crowne Plaza Hotel (newly renovated). A day or weekly pass to use the pool and/or gym at the Crowne Plaza Hotel can be purchased by non-guests of the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Owner of the Maison Gautreux also owns a security company, always numerous security guys there. On street parking outside the hotel, never had a problem there.

On the side street up the block from the Maison Gautreux is the Hotel Alcaldeza. Owner speaks English and has traveled extensively in the United States. The Alcaldeza has secure parking, all the rooms seem to have terraces, rates about $50US per night. Easy walk from there (half a block) to the remodeled Park Hostos which has a reflecting pool, free to use exercise equipment and is well lit up at night. Two blocks away is Plaza Juan Bar?n, which has places to eat, kite flying, Karaoke and restaurants across from the park (Pizzarelli and a German beer garden place among others).

About two blocks from the Hotel Alcaldeza and the Maison Gautreaux is a 24 hour pharmacy, where you can also buy soda, chips, or other snacks at for example 4AM. Also Clinica Abreu about two blocks from these hotels, medical clinic open 24/7.

In the same neighborhood as the last two hotels is a new one, Hostal San Francisco, brand new with great mattresses, and rooms including breakfast. At the same price of about $45 to $50 US a night.

The Alcadeza is charming, set back on a quiet street among great giant trees with a patio out front, and as J Jetson noted, little patios.

Maison Gatreaux has an excellent restaurant with both fondu and rosti potatoes for those longing for Europe.

Also in this Gazcue neighboor, a little bit up Pasteur from the St Francis is the Hostal Plaza Yu, which has both rooms and apartments for a little less, I think, at least for longer term, you can get a place for 1000 pesos a night. They are not really apartments but rather bed sitters.. with small applicances to cook. It is an easy walk to the supermarket from there.

This is a good neighborhood to stay in. There is good transportation and lovely trees for walking. Quite close to the Zona and lots of comedors for eating.. plus, of course, only a few blocks to the Malecon or the Zona.
