I will be in tomorrow morning to see if you can get the newcastle Sunderland football match on. If anyone wants to watch sport in cabarete with a cold beer your bar is the best to do it in, yes you can buy a beer cheaper but not have the sports options Jose's has. For anyone not wanting to pay the extra they can buy a six pack from Janets and sit in the house writing negative comments on DR1

Thanks,

i'm sitting here at the bar right now. I stand corrected on a few things that i mentioned earlier in this thread. First, we have 8 satellite dishes, not 6 like i mentioned earlier: four SKY satellites, two Dishnetwork satellites, two DirectTV satellites, and the last two are just Ednorte Cable boxes like most people on the North Coast has.

Look, if a sports and an Irish Pub is not your thing, i totally understand; it's not for everyone. Everyone has different taste. it's what makes the world go around; it's also why Baskin Robbins makes 31 flavors. Some like chocolate, some like vanilla, but personally, i like Mocha flavor, but that's another story.

Jose Oshay's has been here 11 years this March. Sure we're more expensive, but look at how many more things we offer people--sports and Live Music on the weekends. For those of you that are unfamiliar with running a business here on this island...these things cost money and musicians, employees, beer distributors & the electric company, despite my objections...they want to be paid on time or things tend not to work effeciently.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. i'm sitting at the bar all day.

Jose O'Shays has great seating, friendly bartenders, servers and managers and the food is very good. It's run professionally. I have always enjoyed my time there. I have also enjoyed watching games at Coaches Corner in Sosua. They share the Britannia menu from across the street without additional charge and the food is good. Both places have music but turn it down when the main/important games start. You cannot go wrong in either place. I am going to Jose O'Shay's Monday Night to watch the Chicago Bears vs. Detroit Lions.

MICHIGAN VS MICHIGAN STATE

Yesterday, a group of people from Michigan came and asked if i could put the michigan vs michigan state game on. i said sure, let's look for it. unbeknownst to me, the game was not being telvised on a national network. A bit strange. But ok, i checked ESPN 1 & 2 & ESPNU. Oops, not there either. Ok, even more strange considering its a in-state rival game. I then went online and found out that the game was only being televised on the BIg Ten Network. Everyone got bummed out. A lot of sad & sunken faces. Here you are, 2000 miles from home, and you've just taken a one way $900 peso taxi ride from Puerto Plata to Cabarete to find a sports bar, you walk in with high hopes, expecting to find the game, but then realize it's not on any regular national television station. Bummer.

Not too worry. i flipped through all our satellites and found the game on the Big Ten Network on the Dishnetwork Satellite. The Michigan fans were very happy and i was happy. They took a taxi all the way from Puerto Plata--$1800 round trip--hoping we had the game. I can relate to this because, i have done the same thing when i have been in Santo Domingo looking for my Alma Mater playing football on saturday, and driving all over the city, only to find the game at Five Star on some bizarre non-nationally televised station.

This is just one reason why i feel Jose O'Shay's stands out over other sports bars in the DR. if you're going to call yourself a sports bar, then i'm sorry, you got to be willing to invest in all the different satellites and offer people more than just the NFL game ticket. People are coming from all over the world looking for different sports and different games, and it's such a big relief when they walk into a bar in the Caribbean, on the beach, and to their surprise, finally find what they're looking for...all the while, seated on the beach of all places.

I'm curious, how high is "high"? For example, what does a 12 oz bottle of Presidente beer (pequeno) go for in Jose O'Shays?

By the way, i've got a really lovely group of people from Newcastle here now. They came in to watch Newcastle vs Sundry. The game started at 8:30am this morning and i was here to make sure the game was on.

I could only find the Newcastle game on our DirectTV Satellite--which carries the English Premier League.

taxes on beers that is a shame.... and a small one here in POP 50 pesos...;)

T.E.

HAHA...funny, but i see a problem with the logistics here: the first problem is that puerto plata (POP) is 52km round trip from Cabarete. that will take at least one galloon of gas and 1 hour of driving to get there and back. right now, a gallon of gas costs around $250 pesos a gallon.

2.) The second problem of course is this: Puerto plata is a glorified dump. no, really. 15 to 20 years ago there was so much potential there, and it looked like it might become of the caribbean's premium tourist desitinations. It was definitely on its way there. Now, the tourist business--and all of the jobs and prosperity that follow tourism--has moved to the south east corner of the island: Punta Cana and Bavaro. Today, puerto plata has been steadily going down hill...and very fast. That's a shame. No, it's a crime!

3.) The third problem of course is that traffic in Puerto Plata--particularly around the main public hospital on the main street going through town--is totally insane. Here in Cabarete, we have one street--the length of two football fields--crossing through town. This means you can walk anywhere you want in 10 minutes; you can even walk the whole length of town along the beach and never see the road. in fact, you can walk nearly to Sosua--as far as Sea Horse Ranch--along the beach and its nothing short of amazing, breathtaking! Not so in Puerto Plata...unless you have a mobile A/C unit attached to your shoulder to keep you from passing out from all of the pollution and heat.

4.) The fourth problem is that Puerto Plata had so much potential to develop the Malecon and build modern, state-of-the-art, beach front condos like we have here in Cabarete with the Millenium, Ocean Dream, Seawinds/Punta Goleta, Ocean Point 1 & 2, Ocean One, Playa Ventosa...and further down the road Perla Marina, Sea horse Ranch, Ocean Village, etc--too many to list right here. Instead, drive down the malecon today in POP and it feels like one is driving through the Bronx in 1971. The only thing missing is Isaac Hayes and SHAFT's Fleetwood cadillac. It's a shame, no...it's a crime, seriously. And it's beyond comprehension that the Malecon never developed any modern real-estate developments across the street from the ocean when places like Punta Cana, Bavaro, Las terrenas, Cabarete, Sosua, and many others--have all managed to build modern, beautiful, stunning condo complexes--including modern restaurants, beautiful ocean front cafes, casinos, etc. instead, POP allowed the malecon to dilapidate into a near ghetto. that's such a crime. They could have easily have built beautiful, stunning, modern structures directly across the street from the beach, and had they done this, right now, today, the Malecon would have been lined from one end to the next with upscale restaurants and cafes and condos and people would drive there from all over to see and experience it.

So...today, it wouldn't matter if the beer was free. i'm not going to drive 52km round trip just to stare at a polluted, traffic infested, 1971 run-down Bronx look-a-like dilapidated town--just to save on a beer. Not to mention, there are no bars on the beach where i can sit and watch bikini clad surfer girls and boys walking past every minute while i simulateanously sit on the beach watching sports on 6 different satellites at restaurant/bar with no concrete walls or doors obstructing my view.

...you know what i mean?

Frank, I'm sad to say we didn't make it into Jose O'Shays. We ended up in Cabarete on a rainy day thanks to Hurricane Sandy and our friends were cold and wanted to go back to the resort. It's definitely on our agenda for our next trip. I did spot the restaurant and it looks like a great location. See ya when we get back to DR.

Information for the Canadians on vacation or living here. Last Saturday while channel surfing I found the Toronto - Edmonton playoff football game. Did a bit of searching and the NBC Sports Network will be carrying the rest of the playoffs and the Grey Cup live.
This Sunday the 18th will have the BC Lions vs Calgary Stampeders at 6:30pm and a replay of the Argo vs Alouette game at 10:30pm The Grey Cup will be shown live at 6:pm on Sunday the 25th. I like the NFL but the Grey Cup takes it's place on the 25th.

Billy,

Did you find this channel on Satellite or cable? It would probably help if you let people know, if it was on satellite, which channel is it on, if for example if it was on Direct TV, Dish Network, etc. if it was on cable, whic cable company? Santo domingo, Ednorte, etc. Bonao has different cable than santo domingo, which has different cable then LAs Terrenas, which has different cable then...

Stll, that is great informaton you provided and i think a lot of people, myself included, appreciate knowing this...just tell us which box/reciever you found it on, and which channel?

Thanks again for the info

Hi Frank:

It's the NBC Sports channel # 159 on the Dish Network. I have a satellite and pirate receiver here in my bar in Puerto Plata. I'm sure the Coaches Corner sports bar across from the English Pub in Sosua and Jose Oshay's in Cabarete will have the game as well.

Forgot about all the different ways to get TV channels here.
