sorry, was replying to this...
Both are safe enough but for different reasons.
Boca Chica, as long as you don't follow any hooker to a RD250 room to get off, or go on a moto with a drug dealing concho. Stick pedestrian area and you're fine.

Juan dolio, it has much more quiet spots in tween places, much more chance for something to happen, a lot of Eastern Europeans in JD these days and the police are much more likely to tax you if you are alone or on a moto in JD.

Don't go to JD alone, unless you want some real time out.

I thought you had the chance to go to Bavaro? I've be on that straight away, screw this south coast, it's a sh1t tourist destination. Go to Bavaro, visit Steve's bar, pick up a friend to spend the holiday with you, you'll have to pay extra for her but you'll be assured a great time, on tap!

Also when someone who lives somewhere tells you it is better, safer, cheaper than elsewhere. Take it with a pinch of salt, life anywhere here is different for residents than tourists, entirely different.

how far is steves bar from grand bahia hotel? cant find it on google maps...

It's in Bavaro so it's no more than a 5 minute motoride. I am not a great person to ask about the names of hotels. My choice of where I stay goes like this.
1. Deal search.
2. Choose deal according to the grounds tour on youtube.
3. Ask if anyone has bad reviews.
4. Take into consideration that most people on here are more wealthy than me and used to better than me, I generally. Ignore all of them.
5. Book it.
6. Go.
7. Make the most.
8. Conclude if it was a good or bad hotel.
9. Realise the hotel in which I stay has very very little to do with how good my vacation is.
10. Go somewhere else next time with the same mentality.

I.G. If no one was murdered, it has no or few google hits for bad reports, is not in the middle if nowhere. I go and make my own mind up. I ain't gunna die from staying there, and if it is really bad, then I just drink more outside and end up sleeping in cabanas anyway.

Nowhere in Bavaro is BAD. your young, it's all good. Leave some exploring and imagination till you get here. But I would suggest, change to Bavaro. Caribe mike is a nice bloke, he'll meet you for a bevi, smoke a cigar, leave you drunk and incapable with the hotties. It's a nice vibe there, not much BS, people will look after you rather than exploit you as most natives are employed by expats and they are obligated, or fouled off!

Put it this way, I'm downtown santo domingo and I hear gunshots every couple of hours after dark (but my lovely street is surrounded by hot scum buckling barrios) you don't get that in Bav.

You're going to worry yourself into a heart attack before you get on the plane.

Prediction: The next thread is going to be on where to find "nice" girls

Momas near the Barcelo thats where Frank is. The small bar inside the Plaza Real near the pool Roxi Bar. JD is quiet but worth a look. Come in the late afternoon and get a feel for the place. Not a big party town but good. BC is the typical party town and chica fest. No discos in JD. Old JD is a good place to hit the beach without being constantly annoyied by vendors. Small bars and lounge chairs I like it better there for beach than BC.

I was in BC for a week or so two years ago, didn't feel it being any more dangerous than any other place in DR. I don't think it has changed that much in two years.

Common sense of course is you best, most valuable weapon... !

I always split JD into new and old. I was unaware of a disco in JD. Is the casino the American Casino in the Costa Carribe?

I guess so. There is a small casino on the N side of the road connecting old Juan Doilio with the newer Metro part, and right across the street (or road, if you wish), there is a disco. Not a huge disco, but with all the stuff that makes a disco a disco (booze, loud music played by a DJ, a cover fee, a dance floor and tiny round tables).

Go bar hopping. The place is small enough to drive around, or even walk around and see where the action is good. Just check for the cars and people.

Re Juan Dolio... The today US Ambassador has an apartment in Juan Dolio. Apparently his experience is so positive he accepted (or asked for) the position of ambassador to the Dominican Republic.

My sister in law has a second home in Guavaberry gated community and leaves all her doors open when she is there. Hasn't had a problem yet in Juan Dolio. Has been going several times a month for four years now.

Best advice was given up front. Exercise usual safety precautions.
See this list of safety measures taken from Singapore (one of the places with the safest reputations in the world). Apply them to your visit.

New2DR There is a website for Juan Dolio. Google Juan Dolio living.

Ken
Is there a particular reason you disliked my post? Is it that the website is not current? I haven't looked at it for a while.
I also have not been to JD for a long time so I had no current info on what bars to suggest.
I usually suggest my old haunts from when I lived in JD. They are Guilla's, Chocolate bar and the bar at Plaza Real. I also used to go to the bar across from Capella but that has changed hands several times since I left.
What are the current hang outs and decent restaurants in JD now?
