Can anyone tell us anywhere in D.R. that is classy and plays bachata and salsa? I heard Bachata only play at lower classes clubs? Are there any upper class clubs in Santo Domingo that plays Bachata as well?

In a word: no. Not in SD.

There's no shortage of bachata -- you'll hear it at every colmado. But you won't find it in the kind of disco that has bouncers and nice couches and DJs, etc.

i was always under the impression that bachata was like the national music of the DR. in SD, people tell me that's poor people's/lower class music. until i check my research, am i correct in saying bachata originated from the DR ?

i don't want to sidetrack this thread.....

I don't regard any music as specifically for the lower classes.

In my opinion most music except for the fundamentally sound Ballet and other classical dance, have originated and evolved in the streets as I say. There you have the best dancers of all time and have elvolved all popular dance such as, mambo, salsa, rumba, merengue, bachata, bolero etc. etc etc.

All of these dances have in one form or the other metamorphasized eachother to form various styles.

Actually there is a club that is both classy and plays bachata music. It's called Club 60 on Maximo Gomez (across the street from the National Theater). This place has a bouncer, nice tables and couches, basically a classy joint with descent people. The clientele is a little bit on the mature side but the music is a strict latin mix of salsa, merengue and bachata.

I was their in December and I went to every club in Santo Domingo, My favourite Club was Makumba on Ave.Venezuela, the music is the best, the beer is cheap, the people are nice, and its really fun, also its open till 6 am everyday of the week. Amongst the other clubs, No-where in the Zona Colonia was pretty good, and another Fun club is Guicara Taina, its a club in a cave at the end of the Malecon and its a little pricey but worth it because its unique and fun. Monte Cristo is a nice place but the people are snobby and the drinks are expensive, the music was boring to. Go to MAKUMBA !!!

RE: Monte Cristo

My spanish isnt that good but I still had a wonderful time at Monte Cristo. The guards and the waiters were real nice...the prices are expensive for SD I think but a host of fine chicas, some were snobby others smiled and talked

c'aman, is that all the advice you guys have got???

Alright:

Upscale, Techno, Reagetton, the odd hip hop track:

Dock: In Acropolis, Churchill. Not really a club, but a nice lounge with good music and decent prices, the only place you can find people 7 days a week. Happy hour every day from 5 - 8, there is a section with a mini dancefloor, and they will bring in DJs a few nights a week, good atmosphere and service. A good place to go to start the night, afterwork, or if you just want to have a few drinks. My personal fav.

Loft - on Tiradentes and Carlos Sanchez, has open bar $500 wed, $800 sundays, sundays has a good vibe, Fridays and saturdays it's mainly techno and they will bring in International headliner DJs

Red Room: Ok I guess, techo and reagetton, somewhere between tiradentes and Lincoln, not too far from 27 de febrero - lots of kids when I went

Praia: Again off of Tiradentes, Techno and Raegetton, a little pricey

Monte Cristo: on Lincoln, Open Bar on Sundays -$500, good on tuesdays(ladies drink for free until 10pm), live music on wed or thurs, busy on fri and sat. A mix of Merengue, Salsa, Regeatton, and they might play some latin rock if it's not too busy. btw if the girls seem to paying an exagerated amount of attention to you, it's probably because they are working.

Cafe Trio: Lincoln and Tiradentes, good on tues (ladies drink free till 10pm), also busy on Fri, and Sat. Again quite a few working girls here.

Thao, or Blanc: Lincoln, Plaza Andalucia: Ladies night on wednesday, by far the most pretentious place I've been in Sto. Domingo, not cheap, but pretty people - mainly plays techno and raegetton

Retro Cafe: Across from Thao, not as pretentious, a mix of merengue, salsa, reageton and a little techno, also not as pricey as tao, and in the same plaza there is a small martini bar.

Jet Set: Indepencia, Bella vista, Live Salsa, Merengue, and possibly some of the bigger bachata acts on mondays. I also believe that they have a happy hour from 5-9, or 6-9 daily. It would be the upscale salsa, merengue, maybe bachata place

Zona Colonial:

Nowhere: Not to pricey, not too pretentious, usually there will be a mix of foreigners and locals, again mainly reagetton and techno, with a bit of merengue, Thursday is ladies night, friday and saturday busy

Atarrazana 9: Parque Espa?a, Open bar on thurs $250, busy on friday and saturday. Tends to be a younger crowd on thurs

Moon: Younger crowd, went once, was ok

Om: Techno place just around the way from nowhere, all techno and house, not too expensive.

Another worth mentioning is Cafe Cinema, in the Cinameteca by the plaza cultural on Maximo Gomez, they will have live Jazz, and Afro beats on occasion, and it is in an open air setting.

There are probably a couple places I'm forgetting, but they are probably not worth the time, i.e bottles off churchill, way overpriced and lame. haha

btw, don't waste your time with Guacara Taina, it's completely dead, went by late on a fri and on a sat, there was no one there.

Not bad for 4 months of living there?

Discos

I went to SD on Xmas. I went to Avenida Venezuela discos, all of them from Eclipse to like other 8 that were in the same strip. It was fun on each place visited. It was on Xmas so the curfew was not in effect so I partied until sun-up. Went to Atarazana 9, nice club but was too crowded on open bar night. My favorite was Nowhere because it was next to my hotel and because musicand the place were nice and make friends of the staff and met some pretty locals to dance.

OK, as a gargola (love the night LOL) that I am i will make my recomendations.

Makumba: Place for the guys that are looking Salsa and bachata, they will have mambo (street merengue) and Reggaeton mixed in too, it is not the classiest site in Santo Domingo, but i havent seen the first fight there yet.

Eclipse: Pretty good place, little bit snobb but it is tolerable, they put pretty good music, merengue, salsa, reggaeton and Bachata of aventura only and the likes.

Nowhere: I think it is just like Eclipse very nice music, not too snoobbish, pretty girls there, nice place to be.

Moon: Kids Kids Kids Kids avoid it like the plague.

There are other sites that have mainly electronic music in the Zona Colonial like OM, if you like that music 5 hours in a row thay may be your place.

Trio Cafe: That may be a very nice place to be, although it has go down in class it is still a good place to be. Merengue, Reggaeton, Techno and 2 salsas.

Monte Cristo: It is kinda boring and kinda snobb, but sometimes they have good nights, worth checking.

Jet Set: Merengue Salsa and Bachata with a grade of class in Santo Domingo, not snobb people there, very good place. They always feature a very good artist every monday.

Platinium: For me is my favorite place to be, not too snobby, lots and lots of girls without boyfriends there, not snobbysh, and they play a mix of merengue, Salsa, Reggaeton little bit of techno and Bachata.

Didnt consider price because you should fare well if you are with US$130 in any disco here.
