I heard there was a very serious accident involving a bus from a church last Sunday. This happened on the road between POP and Santiago and there were fatalities. Does everyone have any information? Thanks

Horrible accident near Puerto Plata
With a total of eight fatalities and ten injured, a group of returning churchgoers traveling in a Daihatsu truck were struck by a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck when, according to local AMET officers, a front tire exploded. The blue Daihatsu went off the road and rolled over. Only some of the victims have been identified, due to the fact that at least three or four of them, according to El Caribe, were Haitians who were not carrying any documents. The group was returning from a religious event.

so far 10 people dead, from what i hear, plus about the same number of injured. all newspapers were reporting this...
the victims are dominican and haitian.

people were sitting on plastic chairs in back of truck, then left front tire exploded and other small truck ran over them only 10 people died so far...it must be Gods will as usual in dominican eyes but they did not take precautions....

The driver should face criminal charges.
the driver was gravely injured himself. he may end up facing the highest charges at his final judgement...
Anger and calls for retribution against the driver (in this case) are probably a little mis-directed.
The passengers in the truck are just as responsible as the driver. They were, after all, just as inept and clueless as he.

I suppose we can all take some solace from the fact that these forms of transportation are less and less the norm on the highways in the D.R.

According to Milady it happened in front of the dump between Maimon and POP a gua gua and jeepeta driven by a gringo. 10 dead in=mmediately and 8 more in grave codnition. Now I'll go and read the poosted link as best ica n and see how accurate she was.

this is going to happen, sadly, as long as the sun sets, and the moon rises. there are no enforced traffic laws in the DR. only seats belt laws to fleece gringos. has anyone seen these buses that ply routes like Puerto Plata- Rio San Juan? they are designed to take 15 passengers, but the owners put makeshift seats in them to give capacity for near 30 people. if those things wreck, people get severely hurt just smashing into each other. if this was a serious concern, police could set up simple checkpoints, pull them over, count the contents, and issue the driver a summons. ever seen that happen? then how about this one; have you ever seen the cops pulling over a gringo, and fleecing him for a few hundred pesos for an unfastened seat belt?
