how are all or any of these projects going to lift the 42% of the population that are in poverty.. out of poverty?
Maybe with more tax revenue the 4% for edumacation would be possible.

That, or more SUV's for politicos...

Everyone from age 4 up will have cell phones to electronically pay for everything from gum to automobiles.
And, well, if you have enough money to have a cell phone... you must not be poor.

Our Nostradamus forgot one. We will all have tiny airplanes instead of cars and just fly wherever we like. All this from a country that cannot keep the lights on or provide its citizens with a decent elementary education.

And what happened to the idea that the Dominican Republic was the new Monaco of the Caribbean?

And what about those feeder buses - interesting report in today's DR1 regarding public transport:

Autozama, the importer of the buses, says that of an initial order of 300 buses placed in 2007, the government has only paid for 102, and the order for the remaining 198 is pending.

and ...

The study indicates that urban transport is full of conflicts, where the low capacity of vehicles is critical. 86% of units are conchos only capable of transporting five passengers.

Pichardo aka "El Troll" may gush about the modernity of the PT system (usually the case anywhere when you are starting from scratch - but this highlights the real problem. The Metro will solve some issues but will never reach all locations - you need those feeder buses/bus network and get rid of the conchos which are the source of much of the congestion.

Human Development Report office to be closed

Not a good sign if you are looking for genuine measures of change in the DR.

We're working on that end! Soon to roll out the new educational model in the DR! Teachers being trained as we chat here!

50 TEACHERS FROM UASD AND ISFODOSU
MESCyT gives farewell to teachers going to Harvard

Santo Domingo
The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Ligia Amada Melo, yesterday provided the farewell to a group of 50 professors of the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) and the Higher Teacher Training Institute Salom? Ure?a (ISFODOSU) who'll receive training at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.

Teachers will benefit from the facilities of studies at the masters level that will be imparted in the areas of teaching, physics, biology and chemistry, physical education and other specialties.

During the farewell, Melo said that the initiative to send Dominican university teachers to strengthen their knowledge in universities abroad is a fundamental which aims to contribute to the formation of better trainers.

Teachers will be accompanied by the rector of ISFODOSU, Ana Dolores Guzman Camacho and the Dean of the Faculty of Education UASD, Evarista Mejia and the coordinator of the Teacher Education Program MESCyT, Mary T. Pe?a.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the 7th batch of teachers sent for training and to become future trainers themselves.
Each is equipped with a free laptop (DELL Dominicana with donated MICROSOFT Dominicana OS), smart phone and all the tools needed in the environment they'll be working at.

With this group there are 350 teachers already in the path to obtaining the tools needed to introduce the new educational model for the DR public system, as well as upgrade the higher learning institutions.

Like I explained before, new classrooms and more money spent on the present school system would mean little under the existing educational model we have.

Wait and see...

So we are still going for the model where there are no schools but everyone has a lap-top.

So why wasn't this model applied to USAD: give everyone a lap-top = no need to visit UASD = no need for a multi-storey car-park.
