The old road?

TE=MikeFisher;1127997]jeb321,
from Which Loction are you coming to use a ""old backroad to Cap Cana""???

as long as you are not living in ole punta cana village(you would not pass the roundabout anyways to cap cana) you need to pass it as the only available road to cap cana.

Mike[/QUOTE]

Mike : I wish I knew name of road we use but...when we leave punta Cana village we use road parallel to the scotia bank to avoid needing to use the roundabout. We simply do not yet feel great about the roundabout. Of course when we leave cap Cana going to Veron or Illumel we need to use it. jeb

That's the same road that's always been there. Even if you head towards the roundabout to go to CapCana, you still don't go around it, you turn left before it.

yeah, as Kate wrote,
you never needed the location of the roundabout and you do not need/reach it now when driving between Punta cana Village and Cap Cana, only when you drive towards Hihuey, Veron, Bavaro etc.

Mike -- of course - we know that we never actually need to use the new road when we leave punta cana village - by the way - it is Blvd and then we use what a worker said is called "the road for the punta cana personnel". Anyway - as I said earlier we do need to use that roundabout when going anywhere else, Sto Domingo, La Romana, Veron, Bavaro, Macao, etc. I feel problem is both with the drivers who speed speed speed (and tailgate always) towards the extremely wide (and dangerous) roundabout And also the way roundabout was put together in the first place. It is much too wide - we keep hearing about the accidents which continue to happen. Who do we hear this from? We hear it from the gas station attendants who have actually said they have seen accidents. So yes it is just wonderful to have this road in the first place but it would be nice if it had been finished better.

There is a reason why one should have appropriate training and a driver's license, I bet that most of the accidents are caused by Dominican drivers.

yes, the missing propper training and experience of "drivers" is in the DR a big factor for many accidents, missing driving-education, aside of some extremely poor maintained Vehicles running infuntional shocks, inacceptable tyres etc.
on the other side it is fact that many drivers leak such driving education,
yes, it is also fact that now in the first weeks a bunch of accidents happened there at the roundabout,
yes, the wuthorities need to think quick about a solution.
why the roundabout is so wide on size has it's reason,
in the future it has to connect heavy traffick including large/long vehicles, all the Transit from the SW to the East, Connection the Coral with the Boulevard and from there further up North towards Miches/Samana etc, a stretchy small roundabout would not cover the needed space for the Transit Volume planned to run there in the Future.
don't get me wrong,
I agree that something needs to be done,
as they sure will not manage to give their drivers the needed/propper driving-education any soon,
something different has to be placed.
hopefully they will NOT start to bring up a dozen of Speedbumps there, even that such would be the usual local solution/answer to a speedy transit problem.

The signposting leaves a lot to be desired. If you're approaching Cruce de Ver?n from B?varo, the signposts direct you either to Higuey (right) or Punta Cana (left) so it's up to the driver to guess which one is the more direct route to the capital.

As you approach the roundabout from Ver?n (going past Ilumel) there isn't a signpost that mentions Santo Domingo. It's only once you're on the roundabout that the sign appears, with metres to spare before the exit.

Drove the highway for the first time yesterday and was seriously impressed. It's extremely smooth, the transitions for the overpasses and bridges are practically seamless and I made it to La Romana in just under 40 minutes going at a steady 120kph, Santo Domingo in just about 2 hours. Terrific! When the little piece in La Romana is done (fingers crossed) and they hopefully fix the highway on the way back between SPM and La Romana, it'll seriously be a piece of cake coming and going to SD. Still wish I could just hop over Boca Chica though but you can't have it all!

On the way back, I was very attentive as we arrived at the roundabout and I would imagine the reason why people are flying straight into the roundabout is because just as you arrive, there's a slight rise where you can't see what's coming up (at least from my car I couldn't see it) and then you're on top of it. Obviously you have to have ignored all the reductors and signs (typical for this country) but I imagine someone going at 160kph+ would probably need flashing lights and something more eyecatching to realize there really is something coming up. The locals now know how to handle it and watch themselves but it's the people coming up for the first time that'll probably eat some grass until something is done...

I say the opposite,
it's needed to be done something more for the LOocals who never learn and come every other week flying in from La Capital etc.
a visitor in PC for the first time should be educated enough Not to fly a unknown road with a 160kmphr when signs show 100 and near the roundabout even just 50kmphr.
traffick educated foreign visitors will not be the ones who get in trouble to drive the new road or roundabout, it will be our Locals including the Ones coming over from Higuey for their Daily Labour in their Jeepetas who always think they know it all and can handle all, the same ones who produced the many accidents on the old road between Veron and Otra Banda, the ones who never learn. they drive Jeepetas, Transfer Vans and Cabby Vans.

There was a real bad accident this morning on the road heading to the Coral Hwy. It was just a bit past where you cross Coco Loco heading towards the airport. One car was at least 40 feet off the hwy on the right. I fear the worst for whoever was in that car.

I am arriving in a week or so to race in PC.

Since I will be bringing my bike and racing on the new highway, for the additional days I am around I would like to do some day trips from PC to Higuey or elsewhere.

Is it possible to ride my bike on the highway? I see from the pictures there is a wide shoulder on the road in most of the pics.

Thanks

The highway is terrific to ride on but I would recommend you go with an escort as people tend to not have much respect for cyclists and I've seen cars travelling at speeds of over 160kmh. My boyfriend is a professional cyclist and does not ride that highway without me escorting him in my car... That said, I've seen people riding on the highway by themselves so it's up to you. Good luck at the triathlon!

Toll booths are starting to get built :( One between Punta Cana and Higuey and another between Higuey and La Romana. To those travelling this road, those areas are well identified but please be careful when passing through.
