At a Santo Domingo city restaurant and in the company of his father Leo Ortiz and mentor Pedro Martínez, Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz received the call from Jack O’Connell of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA). He becomes the first designated hitter to be inducted to the MLB hall of fame. The ceremony will be on 24 July 2022 in Cooperstown, New York.

The BBWAA rules say that sports writers are told to base their vote on the player’s record, on-field ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played.

Ortiz is one of the best designated hitters in history with a .286 average, 541 home runs and 1,768 RBIs. In the playoffs, he batted for .289 with 17 homers and 61 RBIs for the Boston Red Sox.

And yet, Pete Rose is still out.
And How about Roger Clemens not getting in (and this was his last ballot). 7 time CY Young and 2 World Series winner.
One could argue he had a bigger impact than Big Papi
Of course he was linked to steroids as was Barry Bonds who also won't make it.
And anyone thinks that David Ortiz did not also take steroids at some point in his career is fooling themselves

And lets not forget the vendetta by the sports writers against Curt Schilling because of his politics..

Roger started the very exclusive nine inning twenty strikeout club, and was a two timer (still the only two timer), before the next member joined.

It is shameful that Rocket Roger and Mr Hustle are not in the hall of fame. Loved the way Pete Rose played and Clements was so dominate.
Bonds, Clemens and Schilling are still eligible............just not by the baseball writers......

They have something called the era's committee (greatest players of their era) that also gets to vote. A sort of backdoor......if you will.

And while Big Papi made it in.............he barely got above the 75% voting threshold he needed. Lots of push back by the writers calling him a part-time player (DH), and his brush with ped's.

Manny Ramirez, in his 6th attempt at the Hall of Fame only garnered almost 29%...................likely because he failed two doping tests.

But it is Curt Schilling who is the most maligned. Unlike those suspected of doping, his political opinions and other views had nothing to do with his performance on the field.

Congrats to Big Papi.
