Do flights from POP to Canada ever open up for high season? Preferably to Edmonton and we can transit Toronto or Montreal as usual . Mid December dates. Very limited options at the moment.

West Jet has a few 32 hour flight with 2 layovers, Air Canada is very limited. Air Transat isn’t very competitive, mostly with higher prices to Toronto only.

Thanks very much Bob.

It does seem limited to very specific dates.

I’m looking for one way and a bit earlier than the 20th. I had a bad experience with reimbursement from Expedia so I usually rule them out.

Maybe you want to fly after Dec 13, when prices rise a lot, but Air Transat have a lot of flights on their website POP - YEG via YYZ and Porter Airlines flying the Canadian leg.

You'll have more options with US carriers. I flew from Calgary end of June with American Airlines (Calgary - Seattle - Miami - POP) total around 16 hrs. AA and United fly out of POP, Delta out of Santiago.

I fly United to NY then Vancouver ( 3 hour wait in NY) Since I am only 45 minutes from Santiago, I also sometimes fly STI-Miami-Denver-Vancouver.

Google flights is your friend--you can limit the search based upon your conditions (e.g. flight time, number of stops) and also shop the calendar for cheapest dates. Then you can book directly with the carrier. One way tickets look reasonable to me: https://www.google.com/travel/fligh...xIIL20vMG5saDdAAUgBcAGCAQsI____________AZgBAg

Google flights can serve as a tool to check connections.
However it focuses on US airlines and connections.

If your residence is elsewhere one is better served to check country specific
Non stop and direct connections.
Transit flights with stops including different countries and airlines are best avoided, whenever possible.

You should book direct with the airline and stick to one airline with connecting flights.
Booking through a third party creates complications if anything goes wrong.
If you have points book directly with the airline.

Not POP but remember Arajet -- SDQ/YYZ - new flights
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arajet S.A. is an ultra low-cost airline and the flag carrier of the Dominican Republic.[1][2][3]
Operations began on the 15th of September, 2022 with a flight to Barranquilla, Colombia.[4]

Why would anybody in their right mind use Arajet?

What would be the point to go from POP to SDQ for a flight to YYZ-YEG?
Taxi is USD 300 or bus at best 4.5 hrs plus transfer to airport.
Asides from that for service, connections and safety one is better off with a major airline.

Yes, you could save money taking a yola to Miami and fly from there to Edmonton,
Or join a wagon train.

Why fly to a third country including customs- immigration- security screening,
When you can fly direct to Canada and continue within?

Any connection through the US for international flights is inconvenient, more so for non US citizens.
In addition there are few direct flights available in the US, using their hub system for airline profitability and convenience.

Just flying from the West Coast to Miami you will find no direct flight.
Any stop en route entails more time, possible delays and lost luggage.

Many years ago there were direct flights from YVR-to POP in the winter.
Anyone living on CAN or US West Coast has to transit through the East Coast or Florida to the DR.

Direct flight is between two cities, with a single flight number.
While non-stop flights are indeed direct in their nature, such flights can also involve one or more stops en route to their final destination.

As a Canadian you have many credit card options.
For example,
TD- First Class Travel, use your points to book directly with any Airline - yes Expedia will give you more point but the inconvenience is not worth it.
RBC- WestJet World Elite will give you a companion ticket once a year for a low price plus many other benefits.

Do your home work, there are many options.

Driving to POP is a major inconvenience when you have a better airport in Santiago only 45 minutes away from home. I actually prefer Miami, Dallas, and Seattle airports over, or Toronto. I never have any problems with immigration or customs. I have no issues with changing flights either.

Also, if you're Canadian or American and flying into or connecting in an American airport, you can do the CPB MPC immigration form on your phone with their app and be in a super short queue on arrival. My last transit in Miami only took 3 minutes to clear immigration.

Querido Sr. contrario Bob,

Obviously POP is for people living in the Cabarete to Puerto Plata area.
Which is where many expats or tourists spend time.
For those close to STI- SDQ- PUJ, obviously they would use those major international airports.

The thread relates to travel from POP-YEG in mid December.
As demonstrated there are convenient connecting flights Total 11:15 hrs ( including a 2:28 hr layover in YYZ) which involve flying the fastest route DR-CAN with continuing flight in Canada.

Wherever you are, the most direct and fastest is best.
Fewer connections, transfers, countries, equals fewer problems, time or baggage lost.
