I desagree with you when you compare with caribbean countries rather than latin countries. remember the only caribbean country close to us is cuba. the rest is puerto rico which is far away from our culture and others african caribbean countries.
It is a bit unfair to compare the big greater antilles island nations with the real Caribbean, meaning the lesser antilles.
Everybody knows that the stereotype of the Caribbean only survives in those postage size islands that stretch from the Virgin islands down to Trinidad and Tobago.
When people talk of the greater antilles, they are talking about real countries, the exception being PR simply based on the political situation.
Also, comparing the DR to PR is not good since PR is not a real country, but if PR's are comparing us to them then let's return them the favor.
PR way of live, no agriculture land and exportation due to bad soil, no industries to export products. very small island to compare to DR. the PR source to work in supermaket, shoes stores and some USA goverment agencies in PR.
Everybody knows that PR has no agriculture to speak of. PR lacks every single type of raw material as well. They have nothing for mining, no good arable land, no space anymore since they are really crowded. Lucky is that person who can see long distance in Puerto Rico without seeing a building poping up somewhere.
DR, one of the greater agriculture exporter from latin america, big industries for exportation, strong in turismo and business market and big gold miners. DR is a rich country if no ask trujillo about it.
Yes, the DR is a rich country. The problem is that the wealth created here, much of it leaves our country to make some other country richer. Of course, things are changing, thus the DR is becoming wealthier every decade since Trujillo died.
And yes, Trujillo knew of the economic potential of the DR. That's why he took over everything and by the time he was killed, he was the second richest person in the world with well over a BILLION DOLLARS!
When it comes to wealth, Trujillo puts all other Latin dictators to shame with his Billions! I just wish he would have placed that money in Dominican banks rather than Swiss Bank accounts. Now, nobody knows where those billions went. I'll tell you, the same place the Jews money went, to Swiss vaults!
This reminds me, we need to start asking the Swiss to give us our money back. Yes, I know those Billions (which by now must be Trillions with all that compound interest from the 1960s to today) was Trujillo, but everything that belonged to Trujillo became government property. As such, the DR should get the cash too!
We can pay our debt, send the IMF to hell with their mercantilist policies, and put food in every poor Dominican mouth and then some to shut all those critics about Dominican culture and country!
do you that puelto rijo was worse than haiti before the USA start to child them. do you know that you were the first people to come to DR in yolas to cut sugarcane before the haitians. the PR cannot support themselves as the haitians. however even if they want, they cant because it is a dead country as haity is.
Yes, I know that. Puerto Rico was the poorest place in the Hemisphere. They actually remained poor up until the 1960s when the US started to be more humane with the Puerto Ricans.
Before that, it was illegal in Puerto Rico for Puerto Ricans to learn Spanish in schools, it was illegal for Puerto Ricans to raise the Puerto Rican flag, segregation between the different races who previously were united was imposed upon the Puerto Rican people and the Puerto Ricans were constantly looked upon as worthless barbarians who needed to be tamed and civilized by the hand of white Anglo-American power. Of course, all of this ended around the 1960s and 1970s, but time may have caused those wounds to heal, but they have not dissapeared, despite many PR's acting as if they have always been treated nice by Americans in general.
PR's are lucky they still have some Latin culture in themselves. Then again, the Spaniards were not nicer before the Americans and before that, oh wait, PR has never been indepedent!
No wonder Latin Americans get so feuled up when PR's begin to talk down to other Hispanics! No wonder!
the middle and high class from DR are the people before and after el jefe trujillo and the educated people with money or a possition in our society such lo vicini, peynado, lama, piantini, lo bermudez, etcc .etcccccc.
Everybody knows that.
the only people that migrated to PR in yolas is the pure people and miseble black people in DR. as the immigration of haitians increasing in DR, more people taking yolas to PR as it as simple as it is. you have to be investor or estimator person.
Everybody knows this too. The thing is that as soon that the DR tries to make the lives of poor Dominicans better by repatriating illegal Haitian immigrants who are taking jobs that would have gone to unemployed Dominicans, then the many NGO organization come and jump on the throat of the DR government.
Then the same NGO groups want the DR government to stop the yola migrations to PR! Well, which one is it? Are they for the poor Dominican or for the poor Haitians? It's ok to be for both, but in each country! Dominicans need to take care of Dominicans and when we get rid of our own problems, then we can take care of Haitian. But until then, Haitians must take care of themselves in the land their anscestors secured for them by spilling their blood there.
since the black DR migrate to PR and new york , people think these are DR people, bunch of uneducated and nasty black people.
Not all Dominicans who migrated to NYC and PR are black Dominicans, but a good number of them are. There are many Haitians who have gained Dominican citizenship as well.
The reason people see the DR as a black country and not multi-racial is because the media only points out the Dominican connections with the darker skin Dominicans and they never do that with lighter skin Dominicans who have become well known around the world.
Everybody knows Sammy Sosa is from the DR, many people are surprised when they hear that Oscar de La Renta and Sully Bonelly are from the DR too. In fact, many wealthier Dominicans (who tend to be white) who are attending colleges in the US are sick and tired of the many eyebrows that are raised when they say they are Dominican. People are surprised to see that there are white people here. I bet, people will not believe the many Asian Dominicans that live here, or the Middle Eastern Dominicans, etc.
This world is filled with ignorant notions of the DR and the ones at fault is our own selves. If we want the world to see us in the way we are, a multi-cultural multi-racial country, then we must portray that image by building big media companies that broadcast our ideals, our culture, our people, and our beautiful country to as many television and radio sets around the globe as possible. Until then, foreigners will impose on us the image they want to impose on us, whether its correct or not!
is everybody here foreigners rather than dominican in this forum? I know my history.
Most people here are foreigners who live right here in the DR (most are in Puerto Plata, a few are in the East and SDQ).
Other folks are Dominicans who live in the US and elsewhere and people from other countries and a very few number of Dominicans who live in the DR are represented in this board as of right now. As more Dominicans hear about this site, this will begin to change.
I am Dominican, live in DR, own businesses in the DR, and plan to die here too, unless war breaks out, but that is very unlikely.
