Two Americans robbed the reception clerk of $5,000 USD they just happened to have in the till and robbed the clerk's cell phone so they could be tracked down more easily (not that they could get off the island in time). Oh yeah and they got some pesos too for good measure. Then I guess they went to their room to wait for the cops to show up.

Riiiighttt.....

A lot of Hotels keep USD$ on hand to change the RD$ their clients have before leaving to the airport (at killer rates).

These two are a pair of hooligans that took a chance from the lack of security, a lone female at the front desk and knowing that money was kept there. They took the cell phone of the employee to make sure she was unable to call for the Police (they also ripped off the line for the phone at the front desk).

Now... Where exactly are the strange parts to the story? That they were foreigners?

People that commit crimes are for the most part stupid! There's no such thing as the perfect crime! Only crimes that were carried out with some logic during execution but little sense to the end.

.

You don't find it strange behavior that guests rob the hotel they are staying at? And to top that, do it at a hotel with such security?

Which report are you reading that states the receptionist was female, and they ripped the line from the wall, I haven't read that one yet, or have overlooked that information.

It was also reported that she was bound and gagged. Not all criminals are geniuses, but there are jails full of them.

Unprecedented: U.S. tourists assault hotel clerk

Santo Domingo.- In the first such case since the country became a major tourism destination, the National Police yesterday announced the arrest of two American tourists charged with assaulting the receptionist of the hotel where they stayed, in the resort town of Cofres?, Puerto Plata.

Puerto Plata Police spokesman Jesus Cordero said the detainees, U.S. nationals Laing Marc Andrew, 23, and Blandon Devis, 22, were guests in the Lifestyle Hotel, where they stole US$1,070, and RD$5,000, and a cell phone.

He said Maria Castillo Vargas accused the two of luring her away from her desk by asking her to make a copy, and when she turned her back, committed the assault.

Nope! I do find it veeeeeeeeeery stupid that they somehow miscalculated the fact that they were carrying out their deed and somehow they would "blend-into" the local population...

As I said, 99.99% of criminals are stupid folks, hence the crime!

I think DR will get tons of cash from the two, if they have it.

What do you think? Will they get plenty of time to meet "mandingo"? ouch!!!!

Note that assault is a mistranslation of asalto (false cognate). In this context it just means theft, not a physical attack

I can only imagine what would have happened if these two clowns had tried that on some street money changers. They'd prob end up being tossed over a cliff as shark food.
