we have dash cams in both our cars. miesposo is getting another set that will face back. i could never be bothered to save day-to-day dominican driving but they may be useful in case of accidents. or so i hope.

I once got pulled over into a routine inspection in Puerto Plata. The person ahead of me got into an altercation with the police doing the searches. I was fascinated by events that unfolded as within seconds the police had out bats and were swinging them menacingly. The driver didn't want them looking in his pockets for fear that they would plant evidence. My girlfriend went to his defense and ruined my fun by pointing out that they shouldn't do this in front of a gringo. Gringo? What gringo? She pointed at me, and I swear that the whole checkpoint evaporated in seconds.

I really wish I had a video of that. Even now, I wonder if it really happened like that.

FIVE inspections? Are they worried about people smuggling people or good INTO Haiti?

Wow, welcome back.

I think he meant the checkpoints leading away from the border into the DR. Their checking for human smuggling. And spare money.

Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, Honduras, Nicaragua come close but if you've noticed, the accident ratio are so low compared to the way driving is done. Its crazy to think that with the craziness going on, much more death and accidents would take place?

They WEAR helmets in Colombia.

If the crash doesn't get you, the other driver just might. I know of three near identical incidents that have occurred here along the North Coast since I arrived.

From todays DR1 News: http://dr1.com/forums/showthread.php/171793-DR1-Daily-News-Tuesday-15-May-2018?p=1884802#post1884802

Road rage leads to injury and death

An unknown man killed a young 24-year old woman and seriously injured her partner following an argument that was caused by a traffic incident on the George Washington Avenue (Malecón) in Santo Domingo.

The victim was identified as Yulissa Merdily Acosta Parra, who was killed by a shot to the head, and her partner, 32-year old Edgar Leito, is currently in hospital with a shot to the shoulder.

The incident took place when the cars scraped each other and the driver of the other car shot at their vehicle while driving on the Malecón, almost at the corner of Espaillat after coming out of a casino.
The perpetrator fled the scene.
