Can anyone sum up what laws have been imposed under the current mayor? I know about the window regulation and closing PC for traffic. Is there a curfew of any kind when the clubs have to close?

Standard curfew system: PN hit the street in their beat of pick up and start randomly taking people (Dominicans) to jail for the night. NO rhyme, NO reason, often unprovoked.... one of the more ricidculous things I have seen here. We have been out with friends who have stepped outside to check on their bike or meet a friend and disappear - only to show up the next day after a night in jail.

In fact one night I was in Flow and the Policia Preventia came - closed off the front by stationing a guy with a machine gun so no one could get out (first time I saw that and I was really scared) - proceeded to card and search every Dominican in the bar... didn't search one "gringo" walk straight passed me (sigh of relief, did not go out with my passport).

Is it just completely racist (Dominican on Dominican racist profiling)? or does it make you feel more safe? Funny thing is they are looking for drugs and I see more gringos smoking pot by the beach and around the hotels than the tourists... Not to mention that the last thing I want to see on vacay is people getting hauled into pickups by machine gun carrying locos.

Back to curfew - I don't think they have a policy on that but I could be wrong. DV8 reads a lot of news - she may know...

I agree with what many have said about slow season. A lot of folks don't like this time of year because it can be oppressively hot in the DR and you can go to the beach and party back home. Add to that people may have gone to cooler locations like Brazil for the world cup, Medellin, Costa Rica, etc.

Things will pick up in Sosua next week as folks will be coming for July 4 holiday and the festival in Sosua. Next week is the beach fest: Beachfest | 4th of July Vacation in Dominican Republic

Yes there is a curfew, on P.C, its 3am. The after-hours club is at the casino where the laws allow them to be open till 5am or maybe 6am.

Sounds like the P.N. were checking for under age drinkers. It happens all the time.

.

What did you see that causes you to call them locos? Are you the type we see at street protests in North America calling out the cops simply because..well because they are cops? I suppose one never see the cops enter drinking establishments back home in the US looking for illegalities.

Is it just me but do we accept certain things at home (like cops entering bars, or cell phones having registered names) but when the same things happens in the DR we are suddenly outraged.

Well, I guess we get a bad taste in our mouths here when, for example, last week I was sitting out front of a colmado. A stinking drunk PN comes up to me and tell me he needs a beer and I should go get him one. I kind of laughed but he would not leave...so I bought him a beer....he downs it in 10 seconds, pats me on the back, and stumbles off into the darkness, gun swinging off of his thigh holster. Maybe stuff like that?

Ummmm no... Here is some example:
2 chicas started whipping bottles at each other outside Rumba - some guy breaks it up - presa
My friend left a bar one night to meet a friend - presa... no reason
In front of flow - 4 guys were approached, 1 didn't have ID on him... presa
Hell one night I saw them grab like 15 people who we see regularly and are not ladrones.... presa

These cops don't seem to follow any kind of logic - or not logic even close to that of North American police. How can you live in Sosua and honestly say you haven't seen that?

Oh sorry and another time I saw a guy get asked for ID by the Carne Ensalada stand and when he said he didn't have it he got thrown on the ground and kicked in the face.... That was a couple of years ago but I think my assessment is accurate. I know some really great guys in the Cestur - but some of the PN's are nuts...

Isn't this the goal you were looking for no more chicas and no more of the night life as we know it in Sosua? Should be happy now.

That's not exactly what I said. As of 2 weeks ago it seems far higher in volume making it a little less difficult to ignore... I have said and again - I support a red light district away from the strip.... but lets not fire this debate back up lol

One of the problems is that when it's low season, the crime rate goes up and the population goes down..

Well thankfully this thread is active. For people who live in Sosua I have a question. I was planning to move out there in august. I already found a nice place per say and was wondering if people can tell me what life is like over there. I been reading up on Sosua for a bit and it seems like its dying. Im not there for the prostitution nor do I have anything against it. Is there actually normal woman there? Is there other nightlife that isnt full of free lancers? I been looking for apartments in santiago and santo domingo and it seems like Sosua and Caberate is geared towards newbs like myself. Also i been wondering how my budget of 1400 a month is. Im not a big partying type. In Northern Virginia I could live off 2k a month. Thanks
