DO NOT FALL FOR ANY HARD LUCK STORIES

Oh I dunno, I think it is nice to leave those with less with a little something when you leave a vacationing spot, especially if they have looked after you and made sure you have had a good time. I find it a nice gesture to leave a good will token to those who deserve it. That is what makes leaving a poor country nice, if you have made someones day with a few pesos. Just do it on your last day if at all, earlier would be daft.

"little bird"

Go to Santiago!
"PM" Hillbilly, he moved there before Columbus died!!!
They don't call Stg. the"Cultural Capital" of the DR for nothing!
IN some parts of the city you will think you are in Spain,or a South American capital.
Iwould live there, but I NEED TO KNOW THAT THE OCEAN IS NEARBY TO SLEEP WELL!

Yes, you'll be safe

You won't find shopping malls, but all the rest is there.
Enjoy the beach in Sosua during the day, Cabarete is 15 min. away.
Try Voy Voy Restaurant in Cabarete on the beach for breakfast.
Sosua is a cozy little town with several beaches and you can walk everywhere.

You're catching some Flack because people expect you to do a modicum of research( which implies rudimentary knowledge) before going somewhere.

Pink, despite its reputation for prostitution and late night clubs, Sosua is a nice place. You will probably get propositioned... my wife and one of her friends were approached for some sanky panky this past March. Just remember that the DR isn't the US, and the social cues and police coverage aren't what you're used to. I don't know how much travel you've done, but it's just different here. There are people that will take advantage of you anywhere in the world... but there are more opportunities in places that have experienced decades of high employment and too much TV.

With that said, there's a great little hotel called Casa Valaria in downtown Sosua... it's centrally located, walking distance to the beach, and has a nice restaurant attached. The registration staff are fluent English speakers, the owners are European, and they might be good resources of information. I can't remember the exact prices, but it's like US$55-65/nite, non-inclusive. You should also be aware that people get sick from the food at resorts... they put the food out buffet-style, and often it's not kept either hot enough or cold enough to be healthy. Plus, the resorts are... um... kinda like Disneyland.

Do your homework. Do it for real! Find out what kind of crazy junk has happened at the clubs you want to visit... the club scene is where a lot of the violent crime in the DR happens. Know that people will try to sell you whatever they think they can try to sell you, and with a ridiculous amount of persistence.

Have a good time with it! It's beautiful down here, and when the weather is oppressive in North America, the water here is still nice and warm, the sun is still out, and you can still get a tan :0)

Hi there Pink!!
My hubbie and I travel 2 DR twice a year with a bunch of friends ..we love it ..but for a young girl travelling on her own I would stick to a safer area(we stay at Gran Ventana in the Playa dorada complex) and make some friends to travel around with.Definitely go off resort!! just not alone. There are clubs in the complex .make some friends and explore Sosua with them!!
We are going Oct.14th again..PM if you have any questions..this is my 15th trip to DR

Casa Valeria is a good choice. Walking distance to everything, and during the evening you can motoconch or taxi everywhere.
