Lest my suggestion for LED miniature (keychain) flashlights was misunderstood, they are NOT toys. In fact, they should be kept away from children because of the temptation (just as lasers) to shine them into the eyes of themselves or someone else.

For anyone else, whether in the US or DR, they are wonderful gifts - little more than an inch in diameter or length, but with enough light to fill a room well enough to do most necessary things, even read at close range.

They are great for an emergency light for up to 50 hours, about 20 times as long as an ordinary flashlight.

I've never seen them for sale anywhere except on the internet.

My favorite, made by Lightwave (another good choice is Photon), is normally about $15, but when bought in quantity, can be as little as half that.

I don't think it's so much what you give, as how you give it. Children are children the world over ... if a thing is given with love, gentleness and kindness, it is appreciated no matter what it is. The gift of a common pebble has great value to the recipient if it evokes memories of a pleasant smile, a kind word or a loving touch. You can enrich a DR child's life by giving it love .... as you can enrich any child's life.

I cant believe some of the suggestions here! ...candy, used VHS tapes, cds. I have always considered gifts to be an extension of oneself. I too have an extremely nice frontdesk lady at my hotel. She will receive a nice bottle of cologne. And my favorite tourist guides to take gringo's into the local hangouts safely will recieve Soni-care electric toothbrushes (they were fascinated by mine) to assist with limited dentist visits. These are just my ideas of course. Also I have noticed men there dont wear the cleanest socks.
