There are numerous sites for information on housing. We use Corotos all the time, especially for furniture.

You'd like to stay away from the areas where the churches are you will be working with (to live). I'd say to look around in Los restauradores, el Milloncito, el Rosmil. usd600 is a low for a house with a small garden. If you are coming with some kind of missionary organization, they might have the correct connections to get you an appropriate place to live for a reasonable price. Drive along Av. Independencia, from Luperon to Abraham Lincoln (western Santo Domingo). There are many neighbourhoods. Check for rental signs. Would think US$600 a month could afford an unfurnished house in that area.

There's a nice two bedroom apartment with a/c near my house. Quiet street walking distance to a british owned hotel with great food. ELectricity is free. Every morning about 25 to 30 people pass by doing their morning walks starting at 5:30 ish. Rents for 7,500 per month. But it's in Maimon (Bonao), an hour drive.
