what i would do if i was you is just look for some good hotels online find out if they can pick you up and stay there for two days then try to find a different hotel were you would like to stay the rest of the days. this way you can have your money and bags in the room while you look for a better spot

Yes it is!
Very "Walkable" too.
Lots of little hotels, most "Italian" owned.
Good food, lots of "Street Life" at night.
Great beach.

You might want to try the search function and/or ask a specific question on a region in that forum, you'll get more responses. Start here, you can learn from others questions.

Thanks for your comments, everyone. Walkable... meaning I don't need a car, eh?

Will take that advice, Rubia. I am just a bit apprehensive about landing in a less than desireable
area, as I do not intend on renting a vehicle if I can reasonably avoid doing so.

I landed in Panama City, Panama during my first trip to Central America; I found that the online
travel site didn't bother to let folks know that the hotel was in a small, well guarded area...in the middle of the hood. By the time I discovered an area to my liking, it was time to go home.
Don't want to repeat that mistake.

Grew up in the hood, have no desire to return, especially if I have to travel
several hundred miles to do so.

Just a little rain, light wind, nothing to worry about.
Storm to the south of the DR.
Unless you live in a tin hut along side the river.
