Let's talk with Aerodom for baskets

It's just an idea, but maybe the administrators of Aerodom Siglo XXI could set baskets in the difrent airports of the D.R. where the people that are coming in the country could leave their donations to the homeless due to the flods, I understand that the people from "Participacion Ciudadana" could lead those tasks in the sad time we are going thru, now!

I am flying out to Cabarete tomorrow. I am very skint as used all money to pay for holiday but I thought if I packed an extra t-shirt or something I could donate it when I get there. Would that help at all? I know it is only a small gesture but if everyone who is going out to DR in the next few weeks did the same and brought something to donate it would soon mount up. Maybe they could contact the tour operators/airlines to ask people with holidays booked as I am sure that any person with a heart would help in this way.

Help from MIAMI

I have several bags full of clothes & I work at a law firm in Miami and I believe that I can collect several more to help those affected by the disaster in the Dominican Republic. I would also like to try to collect anything else that is necessary, but I just can't seem to find where to send it all or who will take it. (The Red Cross won't.) So... once anyone has any information on who I should contact or where in Miami I can take these things to, please let me know.

Beware of any 'organization' using a hotmail address. That may be a sure sign that it does not even have a dedicated phone line for its 'business'. One sure way is the International Red Cross which helps the Dominican Red Cross.

Take your point about the hotmail address and this is definitely something I will point out to them. When I said I could not vouch for Fdn. Manos Tiempo I meant I had not seen their work first hand. According to someone I know and trust they are doing good rural community development work in the provinces of Bani and San Cristobal and they are offering themselves as a source of information and advice on how to channel assistance to the disaster zone.

For people in the UK and Spain wishing to make donations and find out information about organisations who are already getting aid to the victims on both sides of the border, here are links to Oxfam GB and Intermon

Oxfam Canada have an Emergency Appeal. Call 1-800 GO Oxfam (1-800-466-9326)

This was posted on 28 May in DR1 Daily News. We post it here again, to keep where to make donations, in the same section:

Bloomberg and Pataki commit to help
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that a team of disaster management specialists from the New York City Office of Emergency Management will travel to the Dominican Republic today to assess what is needed in the aftermath of the deadly floods. The three experts will look at areas of health and human services, infrastructure, sanitation and mass casualty care, and make recommendations as to how the New York City government can best assist the victims. Bloomberg made the announcement on occasion of the visit of President-elect Leonel Fernandez to his office in New York.
Fernandez also met with New York Governor George Pataki yesterday who also pledged his cooperation. ?New Yorkers understand the loss in a disaster and are reaching out to help our friends in the Dominican Republic and Haiti,? said the governor. He announced an immediate contribution from the New York Power authority of up to US$100,000 to Dominican and Haitian relief efforts to obtain generators to produce electricity in those areas that have been darkened by the floodwaters that rose as high as 15 feet.
?New Yorkers are generous, compassionate people who are ready to help their Caribbean American neighbors in their time of need,? said Pataki. ?I?m asking New Yorkers to show their concern through cash donations to ensure that assistance can be provided as quickly as possible.?
Among the organizations accepting cash donations is the American Red Cross International Response Fund (1-800-HELP-NOW or 1-800-257-7575 in Spanish). Donations can also be mailed to any local Red Cross chapter or to the American Red Cross at P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013; and Alianza Dominicana through JP Morgan Chase Bank, account No. 682501913065, routing No. 021000021, or by calling (212) 740-1960 for more information.

The Harvard Community was made aware of the hurricane disaster
in the Dominican Republic by campus activists and asked for
relief goods. The institutional response was that most of the
student discards were spoken for by local charities. The
institution was reapproached and the result was that 600 second
hand student twin bed mattresses are being collected for
shipment to Yuna by way of Puerto Plata. The activists who made
the arrangements has requested anonymity but the gift is being
made in memorial to Arthur Lithgow. Arthur Lithgow was an
actor/director in the United States who was born in Puerto
Plata. Coincidentally? His better known son is John Lithgow a
Harvard '67 alumnus Arthur Lithgow's granddaughter Phoebe
Lithgow is a member of the class of '04.
Sent to us by Richard Bond at hirambondco@ureach.com

Was followed up by this update from Richard Bond:

Verification of the story above may be obtained by calling the
Boston Dominican Consulate. 1-617-482-8121

What basically happened was that there had been a local service
nonprofit which would have received the second hand mattresses.
They would have distributed those mattresses to metro Boston
families relocating from homeless shelters. That nonprofit had
gone bankrupt and closed its facility.

That facility's closure made the mattresses available for the
timely Dominican hurricane relief alternative. Rob Gogan of
Harvard University Recycling has made arrangements to turn over
the mattresses on June the 15th and 17th.

We are hoping that John Lithgow will do a pro bono TV spot to
help raise awareness and funds for shipping the mattresses and
other relief goods being held by the Consulate.

Thank You
Richard Bond
