Dr. Eduardo Sanchez, stepped down Friday, October 7 as Commissioner of Health for the State of Texas to assume the role of Director of the Institute for Health Policy at the University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston, TX, which he started in his position on Monday, October 9. He cited quality of life and family reasons for his decision to leave his post as Commissioner. Dr. Sanchez as Commissioner was the highest-ranking Dominican appointed official in the United States and had been a Texas commissioner for nearly five years with 11,500 people working in his department. Among Dr. Sanchez's personal initiatives in his new role is to work to empower and unify the Dominican community in partnership with the Dominican American National Roundtable (DANR). With his departure as Texas Commissioner, Dr. Rosa Perez Perdomo, Secretary of Health for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico may now hold the title of highest ranking Dominican-appointed official in the United States as she is the only cabinet-level Dominican appointee in the country.
