Sorry but I don't remember seeing no Ferrari in CMS. I left in 90 but my brothers and sisters where there until 95 and if you are refering to Daniel Peynado, he died in a Toyota in el Malecon, not a Ferrari in Arroyo Hondo.
I also don't think he was in CMS in 93, he had gone to boarding school in the states by then.....but ok, fine. What connection does this have with gambling or casinos? I thought his family had Toyota dealerships and Orange farms... but what do I know.

Even back 20 years lots of 'embassy kids' at school and tourists used to go up to Cabarete to windsurf or surf, which was really 'remote' back then and I never heard any of these kids getting in danger or threatened in anyway. It was safe to travel up there back then as it is today. But maybe there is another North Coast I dont know about. Anyhoo, there are gated communities in the north coast too. Sea Horse Ranch, Perla Marina and Orchid bay, wich offer security too. As a matter of fact Santo Domingo doesnt offer any protection if any its more dangerous in my opinion.

I dont know what corporate plates are....but I want one. Please ask your parents where I can get them. ;)

Yes I am referring to Daniel Peynado. Maybe it's the lore of the day, or the great Santo Domingo exagerration mill. However, I was always told his father let him drive his Ferrari (obviously not to school).....which was a huge scandal back then in the pathetic rumor mills (even with the adults then).

Where he died is beyond me, I was just always told (during many drunken nights) it was in that car and in Arroyo Hondo. You know how rumors go down there, so I don't doubt your account. It sounds more plausible. I felt bad for the kid at the time (and still do), but knowing what I know now about the corruption/daily killings that go on in the DR with implicit government approval looking back it was hard to feel badly for his father. It's always a tragedy when anyone dies that young, who knows if he would have followed in his father's footsteps.....but without question his father was an extremely corrupt and vicious man.

As for the Peynado family, like most high ranking politicians of the time, they robbed the country blind on a daily basis. They were actively involved in printing up additional during the early 90s inflation period, and tons of that money was quickly converted to dollars for their own benefit prior to introduction into the general population. Also, as many people are seeing now, the free zone areas in the DR are routinely exploited as a main secondary and tertiary dropping point for the shipment of drugs from South American to the US and Canada.

The majority of the government down there is involved in someway or another with drug money. The majority of folks involved in exporting/importing of large amounts of goods especially. I could go on to detail more things like this but if you went to CMS I would have hoped you realized we went to school with many of the richest, yet most criminal families in the DR. The Peynados were one of the worst.

And the corporate plates are the teal green ones. Large international corporations like PricewaterhouseCoopers, Verizon etc typically purchase the cars on their international employees' behalf and are afforded these "corporate plates" for reasons I never really understood. It was a great help though, as it had the same impact with cops as diplomatic plates did. :bandit:

Also, my family still owns homes in the DR. Guess who we were robbed by in one of them? The community's GUARDS! We came home to find our house looted of about 10,000 dollars worth of stuff, and the idiot still outside patrolling like he didn't do it. Needless to say they headed to his house up on the North Coast and found a bunch of our stuff.........so don't fool yourself into thinking you're protected by these guards. The people who are closest to you in the DR are the ones to rob you blind. Being a CMS grad I would have hoped you knew that.

My GOLLY GOSH Gilbert, what a bitter & misguided person you must be!! To talk with such blatant disrespect to your own country & countrymen!!! You "Visited" the North Coast a few weeks ago?? BIG deal, you obviously walked around with your eyes pretty well closed - maybe you were trying to smile at the time???

You know nothing of my contacts up here & yet you say I can't get a response from the CAPITAL because I am so far away??? You obviously didn't notice on your recent trip here that we have telephones up on the north coast these days, we EVEN have internet connections & YES, these do get us through to the seats of power (directly or indirectly) if needs be!!

I, like MANY of my north coast Ex-Pat friends & aquaintences, recognise the need for "Networking" & most of us have put such precautions in place. I won't say we are "Fireproof" from arrest or harrassment, but we ARE in a position to get the help & support neccessary to get out of jams if we ever need to!!

We that live here obviously have a LOT more respect for our Dominican neighbours than YOU do & as such, we are obviously a lot more protectd from harm than you appear to be - NOT surprisingly!! No, I do NOT have blinkers or rose coloured glasses on - I have worked hard & long on building up a network of friends whom I can TRUST to look after me in times of need (not that I intend getting to the stage of needing to call upon this friendship).

Please try to enjoy your day - it looks as though tht might be quite a difficult task for you!! ~ Grahame.

Now that I know about your sources I can dismiss you completely.

Ok..........just remember there is a reason why corruption/crime/murders are rampant in the DR. If you think you are protected by your "network of friends" you're not. Those same friends will be the same ones to eventually f you over.

You'll eventually realize it. It may be 10 years from now, so keep those "rose colored glasses" polished for now.

I spoke to some old friends about this again today, and Peynado was in fact in a Ferrari. He was also not on the Malecon, but further north up by the tunnel.

Regardless it doesn't matter. If you truly think Peynado made his fortune through orange farming and a single toyota dealership.......who's being fooled? Farmers aren't exactly known for having million dollar homes and dozens of cars. It's called Dominican thievery...erm politics.

Going on his past ramblings & consequent inaccuracies PIB, I would be quite intrigued to find out his reasonings as to WHAT those REASONS might be - should be quite illuminating!! I wonder what is the REASON for corruption in HIS mind. Sounds as though there isn't one decent or honest person in the whole of the Dominican Republic, doesn't it??

Just to get this back on track, did we ever find out what happened to this poor unfortunate who got screwed in the casino? Did the Embassy come to the rescue or did the person get out of the country? I understand that the Credit Card company is trying to resolve the situation by some form of arbitration. Any updates that relate to FACTS? ~ Grahame.

Dominican Thievery....how clever....did you thought that up by yourself?
Or did your sources help you there too.
Facts9Feel free to lookit up in the press)
1. DP died in a Toyota MR2 that did not belong to his father but to his uncle. The accident was in The Malecon near Banco Agricola. But what would your sources know.
2. The Peynados had money since the Trujillo days when Jacinto's granddad was a puppet president of Trujillo. They had Delta comercial (Toyota & Volvo) the second biggest dealership in DR (the first being Santo Domingo Motors). Their big bussiness here was in selling cargo trucks, busses and construction equipment (like bulldozers, etc). And everyone knows they lost alot of their money and AgroDelta(the biggest orange producer in DR) because of politics.

This is a small place and its not hard to know whats usually going on, ask any of the other guys at DR1 who live here. As I said, its not hard as long as you dont have your head stuck up your arse.

Think what you want about the Peynado family, but they're responsible for the killings of tens of thousands of Dominicans since the 1960s, and are directly accountable for the mass corruption and poverty which refuses to subside from Dominican society.

Much like the mafia the Peynados ended up with "front" companies with money made from fleecing the people of the DR over the past 40 years. And a good analogy for their "legitimate businesses" in the DR are the Gotti family's Brooklyn based produce and disposal companies. They are still deeply tainted by blood money.

Where Danielito died isn't the issue, I was purely stating that the kid lived a life of luxury which came at the expense of thousands upon thousands of deaths, and the unjust degradation of Dominican society at the hands of his father.

samiam has given all the information you need to know about the peynado family.
though they lost the toyota dealership a while ago, i think jacintico still has volvo and porsche.

although i don't like their politics, i hardly think the peynado family, as it stands now, is responsible for killing tens of thousands of dominicans.

however why don't you, gilbertarenas, instead of twisting a thread about a burke who lost some money in a casino, start a new thread about the peynados, so we can hear some more of your bollocks?

still curious

About the OP:

1) Did she get her money (us$ 12,000) back
2) Why the CC-company paid out the 12K in the first place
3) Can she ever go back to the DR again

By the way one, probable way out is a bus to Haiti and take a plane from there.. detour over the NC if necessary

I understand they have "Yolas" departing hourly for PR via the Pasaje de Monja(sp?) but you need to pay in "advance" no CC accepted. ;)

Can the Casino or any establishment you legally or illegally owe money to physically prevent you from leaving the country?

It would seem there need to be a judgement against you and some reason to think you would not pay the debt if you left the country. I mean if you don't have the money, can they throw you in jail without a hearing and keep you there like the old "debtors" prisons?

Very new to this and I don't know if you mean there would be armed thugs waiting at the airport or what. It would seem the embassy of your country would look unkindly on anyone holding you "hostage" for anything less than conviction or allegation of a crime

Wouldn't the Dominican authorities be concerned with relations with whatever country this person is from if they were physically intimitaded from leaving.

I don't know Dominican law, but in most countries that would be either kidnapping or unlawful restraint

Fool

You are correct with this reasoning. The only problem is that you have not factored in one thing and that is the third world experience (i.e.corruption). Your passport can be siezed while the police investigate into the matter and it will take months of weeks.
A man with money that has the right people can do and undo. It is called the third world factor. I have lived in third world countries for more than 15yrs and I know what I am talking about.
It is called the third world factor commonly known as corruption.
