Be careful with the end cap sales at Sirena in Puerto Plata. I have found numerous times that the end cap “sale items” are more expensive than the normal price at Jos? Luis.

La Sirena likes to have special sales on items with expiration dates only a few days away.

be careful with La Sirena in POP, period. you will see sale items, put them in your cart, then have the cashier ring up a completely different price. then they tell you the sale ended yesterday. so, you tell them they have to give you the price that is advertised, and they tell you to go pee up a tree.

Whenever I see a sale item I ALWAYS check the price with one of the price checkers before going to the register. It is unbelievable how many times the price is higher, and in ALL DR supermarkets.

We made the mistake of trying to shop there on Opening Day, the aisles were choked and stood in the check-out line for 50 minutes because some woman was in line ahead of us and had almost two carts-full of items and when she went to pay for it, her debit card wouldn't process, so they had to rescan all the items that had already been bagged. What a joke! They should have just taken her and her items to Customer Service and scanned them back into inventory, but they inconvenienced 35 people waiting in line to check-out. It will be a while before we go back to Jumbo in Bavaro.

I was there yesterday morning. Store was near empty and at least 10 cashiers working. No one on line anywhere. I guess opening day was a disaster.

typical Dominican thang....the place is jammed on the first day by the curiosity seekers, then a week down the road they are all back to the colmado. i love to see folks ambling up to the cashier with two green peppers and a box of orange juice. you know they can throw a stone and hit *a colmado where they live.

It'll be busy again in 2 days, and go back to normal cycles. Pola is screwed though; it's literally in Jumbo's shadow and is partially blocked from the street by Jumbo.

As for the prices in Jumbo. Groceries are no bargain, most were the same or even more than Nacional or Pola. Shopping for groceries there makes no sense for me. No imported meat like the Angus offered in Nacional. Fruit nothing to rave about either.

Jumbo is good for household items, etc. Not for food, small selection compared to Nacional, which to me is best.

60+ minutes closer than Nacional, if you live in Bavaro. That time and gas have a $$$ value as well. But I also didn't look in the meats section too much on Sunday; too much of a literal madhouse. That's where Nacional tends to be worth the round-trip time and expense.

The expectation is that National will have a new facility opening by the Blue Mall sometime in the next year or so. The parking situation at their current location is the big draw-back to shopping there. If it is like any of the Nationals in SD, then it definitely would be worth the drive down when the new facility opens.

I go to Nacional in the morning and never had a problem parking. Maybe later in the day it is bad.

Probably like the US, most busy just after school and around 5:30-6pm when office-folks are just getting off work.

I don't like how sales are deducted on the receipt at Sirena. They asked for a membership card last time after waiting 45 minutes and we just about walked off until someone offered their card. Lousy service on Black Friday. The only real treat was a half pound of imported Jack cheese for 100 pesos.

Went to new Jumbo today in mid afternoon. *It was stupid busy. Friends insisted on buying a few things and it took forever. Went to plaza lama from there and it was almost empty. Plaza had better deals on rum, beer, and most other necessities. Also the TVs are still a better deal at Plaza Lama than Jumbo. That's why we went in the first place.

Went by yesterday after work. There were people but it was reasonable. I found the layout to be ok but they've still got a lot to do, fix, clean and setup. Could have probably used an additional 2 weeks to finish up everything. Some of the shelves are still empty and with a considerable layer of dust. Others have just a few items as if they've already run out or the product hasn't arrived yet. Watch your step, the floor tiles are very slippery and some are broken or loose. They had a large lift in the middle of the main aisle yesterday fixing some lighting and moved it back and forth without bothering to check if there were any clients nearby. Product-wise, it looks like no one bothered to do a market assessment prior to. Selection is similar to Higuey and La Romana with some imported products but not that much. When Jumbo first opened in La Romana, the selection was quite good (could even find chicken pot pies :D ) but after Nacional opened, they cut back on imports and went more local across the board. Also, they have a very big opportunity to sell reasonably priced work clothes but the current selection doesn't really reflect that. Would be a good time to also sell fancier clothes for the upcoming Christmas parties but they only had a few options. They have made good use of the space I find but I honestly thought it would much bigger.

She would not take it. I offered to put it in her bank or she could pick it up at my Sportsbook in Bavaro. And the offer still stands for her to get it.

The underground parking leaves a great deal to be desired. And that idiot guard needs to let people park outside down below (to the left) if they want.

Thx Sky. In my opinion, they shouldn't be open yet so I guess we were both right in a way ;)
