The best prevention against contracting malaria is repellent, long clothes and a mosquito net.
Having said that, to my limited knowledge malaria in the D.R. is rare, and as the previous posts have stated, not statistically worth worrying about.
Also, there are two types(at least) of malaria, the African version being by far the more dangerous.
